J.K. Rowling Controversy Explained

Harry Potter JK Rowling

Although the Harry Potter movie series remains one of the most beloved and successful novel adaptations of all time, Rowling has continued to make headlines in recent years for comments that are widely considered disparaging toward the transgender community. The controversy started in 2020 when Rowling published a series of tweets taking issue with one publication’s use of the phrase “people who menstruate,” arguing that “women” should have been used instead.

After Rowling’s initial tweets sparked backlash online, the author elaborated on her feelings in a lengthy letter published on her website. In the letter, Rowling, among other things, took issue with the firing of a British worker for tweets that were deemed transphobic. The letter did little to make amends with upset Harry Potter fans and arguably only made matters worse. Rowling has since doubled down on her claims in numerous social media posts and interviews.

While portions of the Harry Potter fandom have been vocal about their displeasure regarding Rowling’s transphobic comments, actors from the movies have also chimed in. Daniel Radcliffe and Emma Watson were among the first to publicly disagree with Rowling’s comments, but others did offer their support to the author. Voldemort actor Ralph Fiennes and Bellatrix Lestrange actor Helena Bonham Carter both defended the author, with Luna Lovegood’s Evanna Lynch recently also voicing her support.
