Hellboy To Be Played By Deadpool 2 Star In Crooked Man Reboot Movie

Hellboy reboot movie The Crooked Man has found its lead actor, casting Deadpool 2 and The Strain star Jack Kesy in the role of Hellboy.

A Deadpool 2 star is cast as the lead in the upcoming reboot Hellboy: The Crooked Man. Ron Perlman was the man behind the make-up when Dark Horse Comics character Hellboy made his big-screen debut in Guillermo Del Toro’s 2004 adaptation. Stranger Things star David Harbour then took over the role for the box office flop 2019 Hellboy reboot.

Now Hellboy is being rebooted again, and the film has just chosen the successor to Perlman and Harbour, picking Deadpool 2’s Jack Kesy to head up the cast (via Deadline). In addition to playing Black Tom in the second Deadpool movie, Kesy also played Sergeant Josh Kirk in the Millennium Media film The Outpost. Millennium Media co-president Jonathan Yunger said the following in a statement:

“Jack Kesy is a dynamic actor who has the ability to morph into his roles. His talent and stature are perfect for this younger Hellboy. I was very impressed with him while working together on The Outpost.”

Hellboy: The Crooked Man Will Be A Big Switch From Earlier Hellboy Movies

David Harbour In Hellboy Reboot all demonic red with big veiny muscles and sawn off horns, scowling in a giant church with white marble columns and chairs in the background

The latest Hellboy reboot is being firmly positioned as a change-of-pace from the Del Toro films and especially the failed 2019 reboot. The biggest switch this time around might be the age of Hellboy, who will be depicted as a younger demonic entity in the new film. The casting of Kesy only reinforces the notion that the new movie means to depict a much younger iteration of Hellboy than film fans are used to.

Based on the comic book title Hellboy: The Crooked Man, the new film has been characterized by director Brian Taylor as R-rated folk horror. The story sees Kesy’s Hellboy becoming stranded along with a rookie BPRD officer in 1950s rural Appalachia, where the pair comes up against a local devil who is actually a resurrected version of a long-deceased Civil War profiteer. And in an additional move seemingly designed to make fans of the Hellboy comics happy, the new film’s script will be co-written by original Hellboy creator Mike Mignola.

It remains to be seen if the new Hellboy tweaks help the latest reboot perform better at the box office than the 2019 Harbour-led flop. It’s interesting though that producers have chosen to go with a relative unknown in the role of Hellboy, after last time picking Harbour, a fairly well-known name. This could be part of the plan to freshen up the franchise, or it could be a budget-related decision. Hellboy: The Crooked Man is set to go before cameras in the coming months, but does not yet have a release date.
