Actor Nicholas Hoult reveals that he missed out on three major roles in a row in The Batman, Top Gun: Maverick, and Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One. Hoult started his acting career starring in Skins and Attack of the Titans before his breakthrough roles as Nux in Mad Max: Fury Road and as Beast in the X-Men film series. Most recently, he stared in The Great which will return for season 3, and his performance in the well-received film The Menu. He is also the lead star of the new film Renfield alongside Nicholas Cage. However, his career hit a bit of a snag prior to its recent resurgence.
In an interview with Variety, Hoult confirmed that he missed out on major roles in The Batman, Top Gun: Maverick, and Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One in a row. He was initially set to play the lead villain in the highly anticipated Mission: Impossible, but had to step down due to conflicts with The Great. Additionally, despite screen testing for The Batman and Top Gun: Maverick, he did not land roles in either hit film.
I screen-tested for ‘Batman’ and didn’t get i. Screen-tested for ‘Top Gun,’ didn’t get it. Then I got the call from Tom Cruise: ‘Hey, how about “Mission Impossible?”‘ Ok. Got it. Then I had to drop out because I was already attached to do some more of ‘The Great.’
Movie Roles That Nicholas Hoult Almost Played
Hoult’s statement confirms reports that he was one of the front-runners for the role of Bruce Wayne in Matt Reeves’ The Batman. It allegedly came down to Hoult and Robert Pattinson, with both screen testing and auditioning in a Batman suit. While the role ultimately went to Pattinson, Hoult has long been a favorite for the role of the Caped Crusader. With the DC Universe (DCU) seeking a new Batman for The Brave and the Bold, there is still a chance that Hoult could play Batman in a live-action film.
Meanwhile, Hoult did not confirm which role he auditioned for in Top Gun: Maverick. However, given his age, he was most likely considered for the role of one of the young Top Gun graduates. This means he could’ve been auditioning for the role of Bradley “Rooster” Bradshaw or Jake “Hangman” Seresin, which ultimately went to Miles Teller and Glen Powell, respectively. Despite not making the cut for Top Gun: Maverick, Tom Cruise personally reached out to Hoult to offer him a role in Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckong Part One instead.
Unfortunately, his commitment to The Great resulted in him being replaced by Esai Morales in Mission Impossible. Hoult was extremely close to leading Reeves’ The Batman and starring in the second highest-grossing film of 2022. However, even without these roles Hoult still landed leading roles in The Menu and Renfield, both of which play to his strengths of portraying off-kilter and eccentric characters.
