Recent Oscar winner Ke Huy Quan shares a heartfelt social media post about his reunion with his Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom co-star Kate Capshaw and director Steven Spielberg. Quan, who is also known for his role as Data in the 1985 adventure film The Goonies, made his acting debut opposite Capshaw and Harrison Ford as Indiana Jones’ young sidekick Short Round in the 1984 prequel. More recently, Quan won the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor for his performance in Everything Everywhere All At Once.
During this year’s 95th Academy Awards ceremony, Quan was able to catch up with Spielberg and Capshaw some 39 years after his acting debut. On Instagram, he shared an earnest account of his Indiana Jones reunion with the pair.
Claiming that having the pair present made his “evening even more memorable,” Quan also explained that he was also able to catch up with Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom composer John Williams. Steven also reminded Quan that Williams composed his own Short Round theme for the movie, something that the director was able to recount.
Why Short Round Should Return For Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny
Later this year, Ford is set to return as his famous archeologist for one final outing in Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny. While this latest outing will see another familiar face return in the form of John Rhys-Davies’ Sallah, there have been requests for Quan’s Short Round to make his own franchise return. With the actor currently riding the wave of a successful Hollywood comeback, a Short Round cameo would be fitting in the latest Indiana Jones film.
This nostalgic return would not be without precedent, with Karen Allen previously reprising her own role of Marion Ravenwood for 2008’s Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull. Moreover, according to The Lost Journal of Indiana Jones reference book, Short Round grew up to become an adventurer of his own. Having an adult Short Round cross paths with Indy on his final adventure would help close the circle first started in Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom.
The main impendent of Quan’s potential return in Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny is that the film has already finished production. Unless a cameo was filmed in secret or added during reshoots, it is unlikely that a Short Round cameo would happen. Either way, audiences would be keen to see Quan return to the role that first made him a star in Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom.
