J. Jonah Actor Addresses Potential Sam Raimi Spider-Man 4 Return

J. Jonah Jameson actor J.K. Simmons addresses a potential return in Sam Raimi’s Spider-Man 4, which was once in development but canceled.

J.K. Simmons has addressed a potential return in Sam Raimi’s Spider-Man 4. Simmons made his debut as the grouchy publisher of the Daily Bugle newspaper in 2002’s Spider-Man and returned for the remainder of Raimi’s trilogy. Years later, the Oscar-winning actor would return as a different incarnation of J. Jonah Jameson in the Marvel Cinematic Universe during Spider-Man: Far From Home‘s post-credits scene, setting up his larger role in Spider-Man: No Way Home. Since Tobey Maguire returned as the web-slinger in the multiversal MCU movie, there has been a renewed interest in seeing Raimi’s scrapped Spider-Man 4 happen.

J.K. Simmons recently appeared on the Inside of You with Michael Rosenbaum podcast when the topic of Sam Raimi’s Spider-Man 4 came up and the J. Jonah Jameson actor addressed a potential return.

Asked directly if he would do another Spider-Man movie if Raimi approached him, Simmons responded, “Absolutely,” before going on to say he would agree to almost any project the director approached him about. Read his full response below:

Absolutely. I would do anything that Sam Raimi approached me with. I mean, almost anything.

How Simmons’ J. Jonah Could Return

The way things stand right now, Simmons could theoretically return in either Sam Raimi’s Spider-Man 4 or the MCU’s Spider-Man 4, considering that versions of Jameson exist in both universes. The latter project is much more likely since Spider-Man: No Way Home appeared to be setting up a new chapter in the story of Tom Holland’s Spider-Man. However, it’s been over a year since Spider-Man: No Way Home was released in theaters and broke box office records, and there have been no substantial updates or apparent progress on the MCU’s Spider-Man 4.

Will Raimi’s Spider-Man 4 Get Made?

Sam Raimi’s Spider-Man 4 was once in development before it was canceled and the franchise was rebooted with Marc Webb as director and Andrew Garfield as Spider-Man. Since Spider-Man: No Way Home saw Maguire return as the web-slinger, there has been renewed interest in seeing the long-lost sequel actually happen. It helps that Raimi has remained on good terms with Sony and has also joined the MCU as the director of Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness.

While Raimi has said he’s open to making Spider-Man 4, he has no current plans and is unsure it could happen alongside Holland’s current Spider-Man series. Raimi’s Spider-Man 4 would also necessitate the return of Maguire, who hasn’t expressed interest in the potential project, though also hasn’t denied such a return. Other such stars as Kirsten Dunst, who played Mary Jane Watson in Raimi’s trilogy, have said they are interested in returning. Simmons is now the latest to do so, with his enthusiastic response being a sure sign that if Raimi’s Spider-Man 4 ever gets made and the director approaches the Jameson actor, he would say yes immediately.
