James Wan and Patrick Wilson love geeking out over John Carpenter movies and often discuss doing a remake of Big Trouble In Little China.
James Wan and Patrick Wilson want to remake Big Trouble In Little China. Wan and Wilson first teamed up on the 2010 horror film Insidious. Since then, Wilson has become the Leonardo DiCaprio to Wan’s Martin Scorsese, starring in five more of the director’s films including Aquaman and the upcoming sequel Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom. Add the Wan-produced movies that Wilson has appeared in, including multiple Conjuring Universe spinoffs, and it’s clear that this director-actor pair really enjoys getting together to work on movies.
Given how tight their relationship has become over the years, it should be no surprise that Wan and Wilson have conjured up a few dream projects they’d love to sign on for. Wan in fact shared one of the movies he and his favorite actor often talk about and discuss one day remaking. But even Wan admits that this particular movie is one he and Wilson should probably keep their hands off of. Speaking to EW, Wan talked about his and Wilson’s love for the films of John Carpenter and particularly Big Trouble In Little China:
“One of the big reasons I love working with Patrick on my films is, he’s such a film buff. He’s truly, truly a film geek, and when we’re working together, a lot of times we’re not focused on the film we’re shooting — we’re talking about other movies. We all love to geek out about John Carpenter, about Big Trouble in Little China. You know, that’s a big film for Patrick and myself, and we always fantasize about doing a remake of [it].”
What’s Going On With Dwayne Johnson’s Big Trouble In Little China Remake
1986’s Carpenter-directed martial arts action-adventure movie Big Trouble In Little China is indeed a big favorite of film fans who grew up in the 1980s. And there of course has already been talk of remaking the movie, with no less a star than Dwayne Johnson attached to take on the role originated by Kurt Russell. At the time the project was announced, Johnson professed his love for the Carpenter original and expressed a desire to “bring on John Carpenter in some capacity.” But Carpenter for his part has slammed the idea of a Big Trouble remake, saying in 2018:
They want a movie with Dwayne Johnson. That’s what they want. So they just picked that title. They don’t give a s–t about me and my movie. That movie wasn’t a success.”
The good news for Carpenter is that, seven years after the planned remake was announced, Big Trouble In Little China with Johnson still has not come to fruition. An update was offered in 2018 however, when it was revealed that the remake would instead be a sequel. Johnson’s producing partner Hiram Garcia last gave a status update on the remake/sequel in 2021, when he indicated he and Johnson still want to do it, but said there were “complications that come with a legacy property.”
Why No One Should Remake Big Trouble In Little China
Carpenter has made it plain that he’s not interested in The Rock remaking Big Trouble in Little China. And frankly the man who won’t allow himself to lose a fight on screen does seem like a poor choice for the story, whose hero is meant to be a buffoon. It would be interesting to discover if Carpenter had different feelings about the idea of Wan and Wilson remaking his movie instead. Wan seems like a filmmaker Carpenter might respect, and Wilson perhaps is non-egocentric enough to step into Russell’s self-effacing shoes. That being said, Big Trouble in Little China is one everyone should probably stay away from, as star James Hong himself advised last year. Indeed, Wan admitted to EW that it would be a “sacrilege” to remake Carpenter’s beloved classic.
