Warning: This article contains MAJOR spoilers for John Wick: Chapter 4.
Keanu Reeves unpacks John Wick: Chapter 4‘s shocking ending, explaining what the film’s conclusion means for the overall franchise. In John Wick: Chapter 4, Wick decides to take his fight to the mysterious High Table that reigns over the hidden assassin society, traveling across the globe to exact vengeance on the group.
When speaking to The Hollywood Reporter, Reeves addressed why he and director Chad Stahelski decided why John Wick: Chapter 4 sees John Wick die by succumbing to his wounds during his climactic duel with Bill Skarsgard’s Marquis de Gramont, ultimately being laid to rest beside his wife. The star explained that after John Wick: Chater 3 – Parabellum‘s success allowed him and Stahelski to develop a fourth film, the actor on director decided to use the opportunity to conclude Wick’s story in a poignant way by giving him a form of peace after questioning why John Wick: Chapter 4 should be made. Check out Reeves’ full response below:
“We had the opportunity [to do another film] because the audience [response to] Chapter Three, and we were like, ‘What was the Why?’” . And when Chad and I was talking, the Why? was death — and it was John Wick’s death. For him to get his peace, or freedom, in a way…that was the reason to make the movie. It can’t just be, ‘Let’s do another one.’ It was really about death, or a way of dying. We were really inspired by the Hagakur.”
Where Does The John Wick Franchise Go Next After Chapter 4’s Ending?
While John Wick: Chapter 4‘s shocking conclusion may come as a surprise to many longtime viewers, Wick’s fate does align with comments made by Reeves and Stahelski ahead of the film’s release. Reeves stated John Wick 5 wasn’t guaranteed and was dependent on how audiences responded to the film, while Stahelski explained that he hoped to take a break from the franchise before continuing the series in order to expand his skills through other projects. As such, allowing John Wick to reunite with his wife and move beyond his violent lifestyle gives the cast, crew, and audiences an impactful note to leave the character behind on.
Despite this, the franchise does still have plenty to explore beyond the life of Reeves’ assassin. The prequel television series The Continental is set to explore Winston’s (Ian McShane) origin, while the Ana de Armas-led spin-off Ballerina expands upon the assassin Rooney whom audiences met in John Wick: Chapter 3 – Parabellum, with Reeves confirmed to star in. Furthermore, John Wick: Chapter 4’s post-credit scene hinted that Rina Sawayama’s Akira approached Donnie Yen’s assassin Caine to avenge her father’s death, establishing another character for future installments to explore further.
While audiences may be shocked by John Wick’s fate in John Wick: Chapter 4, the film does leave the character on a bittersweet note. After being dragged into a world he wanted to leave behind by senseless violence, Wick was able to sever all remaining ties and debts he had to his assassin life and was finally able to reunite with his wife once and for all in death. While the franchise’s future will be explored in other stories, Reeves and Stahelski were able to give Wick a definitive and poignant ending that will remain with viewers after the credits roll.
