John Wick: Chapter 4 star Keanu Reeves remembers his late costar Lance Reddick and shares touching praise. Once again directed by Chad Stahelski, John Wick: Chapter 4 continues the story of Reeves’ titular assassin, this time following him as he sets out to take down the High Table. Reddick, who has appeared as Charon in all previous films in the franchise and who will also reprise the role for the upcoming installment, tragically passed away earlier this week from natural causes at the age of 60.
At the John Wick: Chapter 4 premiere in Los Angeles, Reeves spoke with ET about Reddick, sharing an emotional tribute to the late actor. Reeves’ comments come after he and Stahelski previously released a joint statement in which they dedicated the upcoming sequel to Reddick. Check out Reeves’ full comment below:
“Lance is a very beautiful person and special artist. His grace and dignity, his shining light of character was just something really special. [I am] really grateful I had the chance to know him and work with him over almost 10 years.”
Lance Reddick’s Charon Is Secretly A John Wick Franchise MVP
Reddick’s role in the John Wick franchise is relatively small in comparison to Reeves’, but he is nonetheless a consistently reliable character. Charon serves as the concierge at the New York City Continental Hotel and more generally as Winston’s (Ian McShane) right-hand man. In the first two films, he mans the front desk with a poise and calmness that lends the assassin underworld that the hotel obscures an intriguing aura of mystery.
In John Wick: Chapter 2 he also becomes something of an ally to Wick, agreeing to look after the assassin’s new dog while he carries out a hit in Italy. In John Wick: Chapter 3 – Parabellum, Charon gets even more to do, and he proves that he’s not just the calm and collected concierge, but also a trained killer. Charon plays an important role opposite Wick as the two character fight off waves of enemies sent by the High Table.
Although Charon seems to be allied with Wick, the ending to John Wick: Chapter 3 – Parabellum makes clear that Reddick’s character is wholly devoted to Winston. It’s subtle, but when Winston shoots Wick off the roof at the end of the film, Charon barely bats an eye, lending the character an entirely new and even somewhat threatening quality. It remains to be seen how Charon will factor into John Wick: Chapter 4, but the franchise and the acting world in general has evidently lost a very talented star.
