Johnny Cage News Has Fans Mourning Perfect Mortal Kombat 2 Casting Opportunity

Mortal Kombat 2‘s casting news has fans mourning the loss of a perfect Johnny Cage opportunity. It was recently reported that New Line Cinema, the production company behind the 2021 Mortal Kombat movie, was in final negotiations with The Boys star Karl Urban to portray Johnny Cage in the upcoming sequel. There hasn’t been an official comment, but Urban’s involvement was given a bit of a boost when producer Todd Gardner retweeted it.

The possibility of Urban joining Mortal Kombat 2 was greeted positively on social media, but for some, it rekindled the argument that WWE’s The Miz would be a perfect Johnny Cage. Miz, a veteran WWE performer, has made no secret that he wanted to play Johnny Cage in Mortal Kombat 2. Judging from the reactions online, he would have been a popular casting choice. Check out the fan reactions below:

Why The Miz Would Have Been A Great Johnny Cage

The possibility of Miz playing Johnny Cage was acknowledged by Mortal Kombat‘s co-creator Ed Boon, who said the former WWE champion made a compelling case. Years before the Mortal Kombat reboot had debuted, Miz was routinely mentioned as a strong choice to play Cage. Beyond looking the part, Miz also modeled his WWE gimmick after Cage.

Most notably, during a period in 2014-2015, Miz’s on-screen persona drew heavily from the popular video game character. With sunglasses, a movie star smile, and a formidable ego, the similarities were obvious. Like Cage, Miz is a capable competitor, who is underestimated by his opponents. Miz could have taken inspiration from these past experiences to bring Cage to life in Mortal Kombat 2.

Urban comes with his own positives, given that he’s a recognizable name and face that will bolster Mortal Kombat 2, and it will interesting to track whether the sequel continues to add bigger and more familiar actors to its roster. But given his passion for the character and his own unique strengths, which date back several years, it would have been cool to see Miz in the big-screen adaptation.
