Directed by Todd Phillips, Joker was released in 2019, and featured the classic Batman villain (played by Joaquin Phoenix) in a serious, psychological thriller film. A new kind of origin story for DC, Joker followed struggling comedian Arthur Fleck as he descended into severe mental illness, and ultimately becomes a murderous criminal. The film grossed $1.074 billion worldwide, making it the highest-grossing R-rated film in history. Though Joker was intended to be a standalone film, but the movie’s success lead to a sequel being announced in May 2021. It was revealed in June 2022 that the sequel film would be titled Joker: Folie à Deux.

Everything We Know About Joker: Folie a Deux

Joker Movie Joaquin Phoenix Arthur Fleck

Set to be released on October 4, 2024, Joker: Folie à Deux will star Phoenix in his titular role once again, and will also see Zazie Beetz reprising her role as Sophie Dumond, Arthur’s neighbor who he mistakenly thought was his love interest throughout the first film. In June 2022, it was announced that Lady Gaga would be joining the sequel in the role of Harley Quinn. Other cast members include Harry Potter actor Brendan Gleeson, Catherine Keener, Jacob Lofland, and Harry Lawtey in undisclosed roles.

Though Joker was the first dark thriller of its kind for the DC universe, Joker: Folie à Deux promises to be an entirely different experience. Confirmed to be a musical, fans have speculated how this change in genre can come about after such a dark first film, and many have theorized that the reportedly lavish musical numbers will simply all be taking place inside of Arthur’s head. With Joker leaving viewers wondering how much of the film was real and how much of it was simply in Arthur’s mind, Joker: Folie à Deux can carry on that theme, but to an even more elevated degree.

While Joker: Folie à Deux is still more than a year away, the first image for the film was recently released, showing Arthur getting his face shaved inside of Arkham Asylum. Lady Gaga’s Harley Quinn has yet to be revealed, but her role is highly-anticipated by audiences, and a first look will no doubt reveal more about the dark, psychological musical. With the sequel film set to be unexpectedly different, fans are eager to see what Joker: Folie à Deux holds for the iconic Batman villain.
