Mark Hamill has never hosted Saturday Night Live, and the star theorizes in a new interview why that might be the case. Hamill is still best known for playing Luke Skywalker in the long-running Star Wars franchise, but he has also given his voice to countless animated characters over the years, including the Joker. The actor has worked steadily since the release of A New Hope in 1977 but, unlike one of his Star Wars costars, SNL creator Lorne Michaels has never approached him about a hosting gig.

In a recent interview with Esquire, Hamill comments on his absence from the SNL host roster. While it sounds like he’s happy to continue enjoying the show as a fan, he does have a theory as to why he’s never been asked to do it. Check out Hamill’s full comment below:

“Well, let me tell you about SNL. Carrie [Fisher] did it back in the day with the original cast. I was over the moon because it was my favorite show, Carrie was great on it, and it made me really want to do it.

“But it’s not one of those things where your agent calls and says, ‘Hey, book my client.’ They pretty much pick who they want and you go from there. I was asked to host Fridays, which was ABC’s answer to SNL. And I think—I’m not sure, again, I’m just speculating—but I have a feeling that that might have been a factor in not being thought favorably of by Lorne Michaels.

“It’s one of those things where if they asked me, you’d have to do it. You accept the challenge. But the fact that they don’t ask me is fine, because I’m perfectly happy to be in the audience and not have the pressure of being on live television like that.”

Other Actors Who Have Never Hosted SNL

It is certainly surprising, given his past comedic performances, that Hamill has never hosted SNL, but he’s one of a number of stars who have not yet gotten the gig. While Fisher, who of course played Princess Leia, hosted SNL in 1978, fellow Star Wars costar Harrison Ford has never done it. This perhaps isn’t very surprising, though, given Ford’s public persona.

Another well-known actor of Hamill’s vintage who has not yet hosted SNL is Denzel Washington. Washington is joined by the likes of Angelina Jolie, Keanu Reeves, Will Smith, and Sandra Bullock. Brad Pitt and Leonardo DiCaprio, despite appearing in the show in cameos, have yet to actually host SNL as well. Others who haven’t hosted include Bob Odenkirk, Sacha Baron Cohen, Mark Wahlberg, Julia Roberts, Chris Evans, and, of course, Tom Cruise.

It’s clear then, that Hamill is far from the only well-known actor to have not been contacted about hosting SNL. Although Hamill is no longer starring in Star Wars movies, the actor remains active today and is appearing in a new comedy film called The Machine. It’s possible that Hamill will eventually get to host the long-running NBC show but, if he doesn’t, it sounds like he’s happy to enjoy the show from the sidelines.
