A Minecraft movie starring Jason Momoa has a release date set by Warner Bros. The film will be directed by Jared Hess, best known for his work on comedy films like Napoleon Dynamite and Nacho Libre. Momoa was cast in Minecraft in 2022, with no word yet on what role he is expected to play in the video game adaptation.
Now, Deadline reports that Momoa’s Minecraft movie has been scheduled for release on April 4, 2025. The date had previously been reserved by Warner Bros. for an untitled film, with the recent revelation now confirming that the film is their Minecraft adaptation. The announcement was accompanied by news that Momoa’s other starring role in Aquaman & The Lost Kingdom would come to theaters earlier than expected, on December 20, 2023.
What To Expect From Jason Momoa’s Minecraft
A Minecraft movie has been in and out of production since 2014, with Warner Bros. having gone through multiple directors and writers to get the film off the ground. Originally, director Peter Sollett, who has directed comedy-dramas Nick & Norah’s Infinite Playlist and Metal Lords, was attached, but it appears he will no longer be involved in the game’s adaptation to the big screen. Frozen II writer Allison Schroeder was also involved in Sollett’s version, but now it’s unclear if she will be part of Hess’ production.
While a date has been set for the long-anticipated Minecraft movie, this isn’t the first time a release window was confirmed. In 2019, Minecraft was scheduled for March 4, 2022, but the day came and went with no theatrical film in sight. However, now that a big name like Momoa is attached as an actor in the film, this latest attempt at bringing the sandbox game to theaters just might follow through.
Given Momoa’s star power from his role as Aquaman and as Dante Reyes in the upcoming Fast & Furious movie Fast X, it’s more than likely he’ll be playing the lead role in Minecraft. There’s a strong possibility that he will be portraying Steve, the major playable character in the game, lending credence to the vision of the film’s ability to stick to its new release date. With Minecraft still two years away, there’s plenty of time to speculate about Momoa’s role and what the film will entail.
