Screen Rant presents an exclusive clip from the home release of Empire of Light, as Olivia Colman’s co-stars gush about her talent and work ethic.
Screen Rant is pleased to present an exclusive clip from the upcoming release of Empire of Light. The film’s setting is a movie theater at the end of its run in a small coastal town in England during the 1980s. This personal story from writer and director Sam Mendes (1917) stars Olivia Colman (The Favourite), Colin Firth (Bridget Jones’s Diary), Toby Jones (Captain America: The First Avenger), and Michael Ward. Empire of Light released in the US digitally on February 7, and will be available on DVD and Blu-ray on February 21.
Hilary (Colman) manages a fading cinema in a provincial English coastal town and struggles with her mental health. Stephen (Ward) is a new employee at the cinema, who dreams of getting out of the small, narrow-minded town where he faces daily adversity. The two will forge a relationship that will alleviate some of their cares and bring a sense of belonging while they experience the healing power of music, cinema, and community. Screen Rant is thrilled to present an exclusive clip of a behind the scene feature on the home video release of Empire of Light.
Empire of Light Benefited Greatly From Olivia Colman’s Presence
In this exclusive clip presented by Screen Rant, take a look at one of the exclusive featurettes on the home video release. The focus of this segment is the performance of the film’s lead, Academy Award winner Olivia Colman. Her co-stars, Firth and Ward, filmmaker Sam Mendes, and Executive Producer Michael Lerman all rave about her professionalism and talent, while expressing awe at her craft. The clip makes it clear that there was great rapport with the team behind the scenes of the film, and that Colman is not only an exceptionally talented actor but also a wonderful presence on a film set.
The trailer gives a poignant look at the story behind the film. A voiceover by the cinema’s projectionist, Norman (Jones), explains the way film works using a tiny flaw in our optic nerves that allows pictures shown at a 24-frame rate to appear as a movement. Perfectly timed with these words are shots of Hilary and Stephen as they experience sorrow and despair, only to then be lifted into the light by their newfound relationship. The film encapsulates just how important those human connections are in the most turbulent times of life.
Empire of Light is just one compelling film distributed by Searchlight Pictures in 2023. The studio currently has a major Oscar contender, Banshees of Inisheren, which had a strong showing at the BAFTA awards over the weekend. The film took home awards for Best British Film, Best Original Screenplay, Best Supporting Actor (Barry Keoghan), and Best Supporting Actress (Kerry Condon). Searchlight Pictures 2023 slate will include the April 21st release of Chevalier, based on the true story of the illegitimate son of an African slave and a French plantation owner who rises to the heights of French society as a composer.
Empire of Light will be released on DVD and Blu-ray on February 21.
