The official trailer for Disney’s Peter Pan & Wendy has now been released, teasing an exciting return to Neverland and an epic showdown with Jude Law’s Captain Hook. Based on the beloved 1953 animated classic, which is itself based on the works of author J.M. Barrie, Peter Pan & Wendy is Disney’s latest live-action remake. The film hails from director David Lowery and, in addition to Law as Hook, stars Alexander Molony as Peter, Ever Anderson as Wendy, and Yara Shahidi as Tinker Bell.
Now, ahead of the Peter Pan & Wendy release date later this month, Walt Disney Studios has released the first full-length trailer for the film, which provides a new look at Peter and Captain Hook’s action-packed sword-fighting duel. Check out the new trailer below:
The trailer shows off more of Neverland and its inhabitants and marks the first true unveiling of Law’s take on Captain Hook and his crew of miscreants. In addition to showing off the film’s human antagonists, the trailer also provides a first look at Tick-Tock the Crocodile.
What The Peter Pan & Wendy Trailer Reveals About The Movie
As has been the case with most of the recent Disney live-action remakes, the recent trailer affirms Peter Pan & Wendy will be updated for modern audiences. Lowery’s upcoming take on the animated classic appears to feature a far more diverse cast and, judging from only a brief scene in the trailer, already seems to be avoiding the harmful Native American stereotypes present in the original Peter Pan. Shahidi previously spoke about this particular issue, claiming that Peter Pan & Wendy will correct issues regarding Native American representation.
Of course, in addition to updating outdated stereotypes and bringing on a more diverse cast, Peter Pan & Wendy will clearly not be skimping out on action. The trailer affirms that there will be flying scenes and sword fights aplenty, and even teases that the crocodile will be just as fixated on eating Captain Hook as he was in the original film. In addition to featuring lots of action, the trailer also suggests that the film’s emotional core will remain intact.
As with the original film, it looks like Peter Pan & Wendy will explore themes regarding childhood and what it means to grow up. This is exemplified in the trailer when an emotional Wendy tells Peter that “to grow up might just be the biggest adventure of all.” It remains to be seen how Peter Pan & Wendy will compare to Disney’s original animated movie, but audiences thankfully only have a few more weeks to wait before they find out.
