Yara Shahidi opens up about her on-set experience filming Disney’s upcoming Peter Pan & Wendy, revealing that she thought she was being pranked. Known for their beloved line-up of animated classics, Disney has recently turned their attention to live-action remakes. Having adapted a number of their animated releases into live-action, including Cinderella, Beauty & The Beast, Aladdin, and Mulan, stories such as Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs and The Little Mermaid are now also set to hit screens in the near future. 2023 will see the beloved 1953 classic Peter Pan reimagined by director David Lowery in Peter Pan & Wendy.
During a recent appearance on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, Shahidi discussed what it was like filming Peter Pan & Wendy, in which she plays the pint-sized pixie Tinkerbell.
The star discussed how the entire experience made her feel like she was the subject of an elaborate prank, as her castmates were shooting on physical sets in Vancouver while she was shooting using motion capture in “a garage in Burbank.” Shahidi recalled how the advanced tech was lost on her, before revealing that her scene partner was a Kermit the Frog doll which she used for reference. Check out Shahidi’s hilarious recollection below.
It was incredible and I thought I was being punked the whole time because, I know I’m being part of Peter Pan & Wendy, and you see with Avatar coming out what behind the scenes of all these CGI motion capture movies look like. So I was ready for the harnesses and the suits with the dots on it. [The cast] were on incredible sets in Vancouver and I was in a garage in Burbank the whole time.
The tech is so advanced and to an untrained eye, which I am, it looks like GoPros on some grip stands like holding things together. I had my castmates on little poles, like pictures of their face on little stands around me for reference. Sometimes when I needed to act opposite somebody, they had a life-sized Kermit the Frog doll for me to work with.
Everything We Know About Peter Pan & Wendy
Disney has remained tight-lipped about Peter Pan & Wendy, with very little revealed so far in the lead-up to the film’s release. Alongside Shahidi, the film will see Alexander Molony and Ever Anderson star as the film’s titular characters, while Jude Law will play Captain Hook and Jim Gaffigan will play his right-hand man Mr. Smee. Joshua Pickering and Jacobi Jupe will play John and Michael Darling, respectively, while Alan Tudyk and Molly Parker will star as the children’s parents Mr. and Mrs. Darling.
Peter Pan & Wendy was initially expected to release in theaters, however, the film is now slated to release exclusively on Disney+ at some point this year. In the lead-up to Peter Pan & Wendy‘s debut, very little promotional material has been shared, sparking further intrigue from audiences who are eager to see the live-action adaptation finally hit screens. Back in December, audiences got their first look at Molony’s Peter Pan during a Disney+ 2023 preview, while the release of Peter Pan & Wendy‘s poster also offered a glimpse at the dream-like visuals this film looks set to feature.
Shahidi’s experience filming Peter Pan & Wendy is certainly hilarious and offers a unique insight into the not-so-glamorous side of capturing these CGI-heavy projects. With a significant level of secrecy surrounding this project, audiences are incredibly excited to finally get a glimpse of Shahidi’s Tinkerbell, as well as witness her portrayal of the character who is beloved for both her feistiness and her loyalty. While an exact release date for Peter Pan & Wendy is yet to be confirmed, many hope there isn’t long to go until the much-anticipated remake welcomes audiences back to Neverland.
