Though having departed in season 4, Rachael Leigh Cook is ready to rejoin the fold for a new Psych movie. Cook first made her debut in the beloved USA detective comedy series in season 3 as Abigail Lytar, the high school ex-girlfriend of James Roday Rodriguez’s Shawn Spencer whom he rekindles with at their reunion. After two seasons of dating, Abigail would break up with Shawn in the Psych season 4 finale after nearly becoming a victim to Mr. Yin and finding herself unable to deal with the stresses of his job.

While speaking exclusively with Screen Rant for the Netflix rom-com A Tourist’s Guide to Love, Rachael Leigh Cook was asked about her potential appearance in a new Psych movie. After humorously reciting one of the show’s iconic catchphrases of “No, you suck it!“, the former series star eagerly expressed her hopes to one day come back and embraced the franchise’s unique fanbase name. See what Cook said below:

I would be thrilled to get that call. In the meantime, it’s kind of hilarious that I am living the real-life version of what they say Abigail is up to, which is traveling. Kind of weird, right? I don’t know, maybe I just dipped into another dimension, I’m not sure how that works, but it feels like what happened. Exactly! But I’m a huge Psych-O, as well, I love that show, I love those guys, and yeah, of course I would pick up the phone if that call came.

How Abigail Could Return In A Future Psych Movie

Of the handful of breakups seen for various characters throughout the show, Abigail and Shawn’s proved to be one of the more heartbreaking of Psych‘s run, especially considering he actively chose to save her over Maggie Lawson’s Juliet, despite his frequent pursuing of her. When paired with the likes of his mom’s return and the near death of his dad, it was one of the most emotionally vulnerable moments for Shawn that resulted in some growth for the typically childish protagonist.

Though the years since her departure have seen Shawn ultimately end up with Jules, there is a number of potential ways Abigail could return in a future Psych movie. With the faux psychic, his wife and best friend, Dulé Hill’s Gus, all now living in San Francisco, Cook’s elementary school teacher could have unexpectedly cross paths with her ex in the Northern Californian city, having moved there in an attempt to get away from her traumatic near-death experience in Santa Barbara. She could also seek out Shawn and Gus’ help with something going on in her life, leading to futher closure for the former couple.

Creator Steve Franks has teased his desire for the Fast and Furious franchise to inspire future Psych movies, and with them evolving from US-based street racing to international espionage and heists, it would be fun to see Shawn and Gus take their hijinks to similar new heights. In the meantime, audiences can revisit the entirety of the Psych franchise on Peacock now.
