Ghostbusters: Afterlife 2 star Ernie Hudson teases Winston’s crucial role in the upcoming sequel, which includes upgrading ghostbusting itself. Serving as a legacy sequel to the two original films released in the 1980s, 2021’s Ghostbusters: Afterlife introduces a new cast of heroes while also bringing back a number of legacy characters. Director Jason Reitman returns with a sequel to the film due out later this year, which will bring the action back to New York City and the classic firehouse.

As the Ghostbusters: Afterlife 2 release date slowly approaches, Hudson reveals in a recent interview with The Illuminerdi what audiences can expect from Winston Zeddemore. Due to the vast fortune that Winston has amassed since the original movies, it sounds like the gang’s ghostbusting gear could be getting some upgrades. Check out Hudson’s full comment below

“Winston has gone on, you know, has become very successful and he credits a lot of that to his time as a Ghostbuster. But he embraces it and he takes part of his fortune to take Ghostbusting to the next level and it’s great to see him now, you know not just being, ‘I just need a job, you people are crazy but hey…I signed up for it now I’m in it.’”

Winston Is The Perfect Legacy Character To Anchor Ghostbusters: Afterlife 2

Winston was first introduced in 1984’s Ghostbusters, but was largely a more peripheral character compared to the likes of Bill Murray’s Dr. Peter Venkman, Dan Aykroyd’s Dr. Raymond Stantz, and Harold Ramis’ Dr. Egon Spengler. While Winston would feature more prominently in Ghostbusters 2 in 1989, he still arguably wasn’t fully explored as a character.

Winston only features very briefly in Ghostbusters: Afterlife along with the other legacy characters, but the success he has achieved in his life relative to his former partners makes him an exciting character to focus on moving forward. Although newcomers like Mckenna Grace’s Phoebe, Finn Wolfhard’s Trevor, Paul Rudd’s Grooberson, and Carrie Coon’s Callie should undoubtedly carry the franchise forward after Ghostbusters: Afterlife’s emotional ending, the upcoming sequel has an opportunity to correct past mistakes regarding Winston’s underdevelopment in the original films.

What’s more, the fact that Winston is now a millionaire means that the upcoming sequel can introduce some upgrades to the team’s equipment. After Ghostbusters: Afterlife introduced the idea of a mobile proton pack turret on the outside of the Ectomobile, the new sequel can take this idea and run with it, putting additional spins on familiar gadgets. It remains to be seen how prominently Winston will feature in Ghostbusters: Afterlife 2, but it certainly sounds like some exciting changes are to come.
