Russell Crowe and Ryan Gosling came up with an unexpected title for a sequel to The Nice Guys. The 2016 buddy action-comedy stars Crowe and Gosling as two private eyes in 1970s Los Angeles who get caught up in a complex conspiracy involving an adult film actress, an anti-pollution protest group, and an experimental film financed by Robert Downey Jr.’s Sid Shattuck. Because of Gosling and Crowe’s irresistible chemistry and knack for buddy cop comedy, The Nice Guys cultivated a cult following that, in the years since it was released, has wondered about a potential sequel.
During a recent appearance on the KFC Radio podcast from Barstool Sports, Crowe shared an unexpected title that he and Gosling came up with for a sequel to The Nice Guys. The Australian actor revealed it is “Nice Guys: The Mexican Detectives,” which matches the inexplicable plot they came up with. Read what Crowe shared or watch the relevant portion of the video below, starting at 27:43:
We wanted to call it “Nice Guys: The Mexican Detectives.” Bang! It’s me and Ryan, somehow we’ve got to pretend we’re Mexican detectives.
Why The Nice Guys Deserves A Sequel
Since its release in 2016, The Nice Guys has garnered a cult following who have been quite vocal about wanting a sequel. At the end of the movie, Gosling and Crowe’s characters establish the titular detective agency known as The Nice Guys on Christmas Eve, which created the expectation for at least one, if not multiple sequels centered around the mismatched sleuths – Jackson Healy and Holland March. However, Crowe and Gosling’s unusual idea involving the pair pretending to be Mexican detectives is probably not what many had in mind.
The Nice Guys‘ lackluster box office returns, grossing $62 million on a $50 million budget, is what has prevented a sequel from getting off the ground. In 2018, director Shane Black said he would make a sequel to The Nice Guys “in a heartbeat,” though the only obstacle in his way is getting a studio to finance it. It also doesn’t help that Black hasn’t directed a movie since 2018’s The Predator and has disappeared from film since. Perhaps Gosling and Crowe’s unexpected idea could be the catalyst that finally gets a sequel to The Nice Guys to come together.
