As development continues on the threequel, Ben Schwartz is addressing the chances of Sonic the Hedgehog 3‘s Jim Carrey return. The two-time Golden Globe winner has starred in the movies based on SEGA’s iconic video games as Doctor Ivo “Eggman” Robotnik, the mad scientist initially tasked by the government to investigate Sonic’s existence on Earth, only to be revealed to be keen to use his powers to take over the world. Just prior to Sonic the Hedgehog 2‘s release, Carrey announced he was eyeing retirement after the sequel.

While speaking with The Hollywood Reporter at the premiere of the horror-comedy Renfield, Ben Schwartz opened up about Sonic the Hedgehog 3‘s development. When asked whether Jim Carrey will return after previously indicating he’d be retiring, Schwartz admitted the crew are still “not sure” if the iconic actor will be back to play Doctor Eggman, though shared his hopes for him and the rest of the cast to be involved with the threequel. See what Schwartz shared in the quotes and video below:

I know that Jim Carrey did some interviews, and he’s – they’re not sure if he’s coming back. My hope is that we all get to come back and we all get to do another one. That is my hope of all hopes, because I love that franchise so much, and I love the fans, and I love all the stuff we’ve made. So, my hope is that we all get to do this third one, and it’ll be the best time.

Should Carrey Return For Sonic the Hedgehog 3?

Carrey’s retirement announcement was considered a shock to the industry as his turn as Robotnik in the first Sonic the Hedgehog was largely hailed as a comeback for the actor alongside his Golden Globe-nominated performance in the Showtime comedy Kidding. Additionally, with Eggman acting as the main antagonist for nearly every Sonic the Hedgehog game, having another film without Carrey’s villain chasing down the SEGA hero would prove a disappointment to those who grew up with the source material.

It should be noted, however, that while Carrey indicated he would be leaving his career behind, he has confirmed a well-written script could convince him to get back to work, a goal producers Neal H. Moritz and Toby Ascher are striving for with Sonic the Hedgehog 3. Though they haven’t indicated what their alternative plan would be if he doesn’t return, they have confirmed that the 2024 threequel, and any other sequels, would not recast Robotnik.

However, with the ending also setting up the introduction of Shadow the Hedgehog, created by Eggman’s grandfather, one would hope Carrey is convinced to return to further explore his character’s backstory. Only time will tell as Sonic the Hedgehog 3 continues its development leading to its December 20, 2024 release.
