Screen Rant is proud to exclusively present a deleted scene from Disney’s animated pulp adventure movie, Strange World, featuring Searcher and his son Ethan. Strange World follows the legendary Clades, a family of explorers who have an important place in the history of their home, Avalonia. When something threatens the safety and prosperity of Avalonia, Searcher is forced to take on his most important and dangerous mission yet to discover what the threat is and how to stop it. Searcher is joined on this adventure by his wife, Meridian; son, Ethan; father, Jaeger; and his father’s former fellow adventurer, now President of Avalonia, Callisto Mal.

Strange World leans into the adventure genre, taking inspiration from classics including Indiana Jones and Journey To The Center Of The Earth while incorporating the comedy and family dynamics of movies like National Lampoon’s Vacation and Little Miss Sunshine. At the heart of Strange World are the father-son relationships between Jaeger, Searcher, and Ethan, with each generation wishing for very different legacies and experiences, but they’ll need to learn to see from the other’s perspective if they want their family to survive this adventure. Strange World also features Disney’s first LGBTQ teen, Ethan. Strange World will be available on Digital on December 23 and on 4K, Blu-ray, and DVD on February 14.

More About Strange World

Screen Rant’s exclusive Strange World deleted scene, available as part of the bonus features, is introduced by Lisa Treiman, one of the two Heads of Story. She reveals that the scene would have taken place at the end of the first act of the movie. She explains that the Searcher and Ethan scene was cut because they wanted to keep the pacing in this act and get Searcher onto the ship for his adventure below Avalonia, so they moved it to an earlier beat in Act 1. The scene begins with Ethan trying to convince Searcher to bring him on the expedition with him, but Searcher refuses to budge in his decision to go alone. Searcher explains to Ethan that he doesn’t talk about his father, Jaeger, because they had a difficult relationship.

While the world sees Jaeger as a hero, Searcher sees him as a selfish father more concerned with his own goals and accomplishments than his son. Searcher is determined to break this cycle. Searcher’s fears and anxieties surrounding Jaeger and his own parenting of Ethan are a driving force. He wants to keep Ethan protected from this explorer lifestyle because he associates it with danger and neglect. While Ethan wants to be an explorer, he has very different reasons than Jaeger. Ethan wants to make new discoveries and go on adventures in part to honor the legacy of Jaeger, having grown up in a city that sees him as a larger-than-life heroic figure but also to find his own path.

Strange World has a surprise twist ending that brings the story full circle, in which Searcher realizes he must listen to Ethan about his future plans as well as the current exploration and Jaeger finally learns to put his family first. Strange World perfectly captures the balance between the adventure genre, the heartfelt family dynamic, and the genuine comedy that is born of a family and wild adventure. While it is understandable that the clip was cut for time and that the same material is covered in other scenes, this would have been the beginning of both Ethan and Searcher opening up to and understanding one another even before their journey in Strange World begins.
