Super Mario Art Imagines The Plumber Powered Up As The Boys Homelander

The Super Mario Bros. Movie‘s fan-favorite plumber becomes The Boys’ Homelander in a fun new piece of fan art. Nintendo’s Mario was first introduced back in the 1980s and is now one of the most iconic video game characters of all time. The plumber is making the jump to the big screen in The Super Mario Bros. Movie, which sees him voiced by Chris Pratt and teaming up with Princess Peach (Anya Taylor-Joy), Luigi (Charlie Day), and Donkey Kong (Seth Rogen) to take down Bowser (Jack Black) before he conquers the Mushroom Kingdom.

Although the two franchises seemingly have nothing in common, a new piece of fan art from Starkhouse on Instagram imagines a Super Mario Bros. Movie crossover with Prime Video’s The Boys in which Mario becomes Homelander.

The art sees Mario sporting Homelander’s distinctive blue, red, and gold super suit, and even the character’s blonde hair. While the art makes for a fun thought experiment, the latest Super Mario Bros. adaptation thankfully doesn’t feature a version of the titular plumber who is as violent or egomaniacal as Antony Starr’s The Boys‘ villain.

Mario Isn’t So Different From A Superhero

Since his introduction in the 1980s, Mario has featured a number of different looks. In the very first game, for example, Mario is wearing red overalls with a green shirt underneath, which is very different from the look most associated with the character. Now, Mario is best known for wearing blue overalls, a red shirt, red hat, and a mustache, a look that Pratt’s controversial Mario sports in The Super Mario Bros. Movie. Red and blue, interestingly, are common superhero costume color choices.

While the blue overalls with red shirt combo is the most widely known Mario outfit, the plumber’s look can also change depending upon which power-up he collects. These power-ups have previously changed Mario’s outfit to consist of white on red, white on blue, or introducing new elements entirely like a helicopter helmet and flight suit. Other power-ups, of course, make Mario either much bigger or much smaller than his standard size, or make him completely invincible.

Combined with his incredible jumping ability and physical stamina, Mario perhaps isn’t really so different from a superhero after all. In fact, it’s not hard to imagine a Super Mario Bros. game in which the titular character collects a power-up that briefly allows him to wear a Homelander-like super suit. While the worlds of The Super Mario Bros. Movie and The Boys are unlikely to collide anytime soon, this latest piece of fan does raise interesting questions regarding what Mario would be like as a superhero.
