The Super Mario Bros. Movie is only the fifth film of the pandemic era to cross the $1 billion milestone. The previous film to cross this line was the James Cameron megahit Avatar: The Way of Water, which premiered in December 2022. The only other films that have reached those heights are 2022’s Top Gun: Maverick and Jurassic World: Dominion as well as 2021’s Spider-Man: No Way Home.
Because this is such a rare achievement these days, there is some question as to whether another 2023 movie will be able to cross that threshold. However, there are some major releases incoming that have the potential to rocket their way past $1 billion. Several of these are being put out by Disney, including the MCU trilogy-capper Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, the live-action remake of The Little Mermaid, and Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny.
There are huge franchise tent poles coming out from every major studio this summer, quite a few of which could also make $1 billion.
