Tom Holland’s Spider-Man gets crowned the top movie character of 2022 after an emotional performance in the groundbreaking Spider-Man: No Way Home.
The extremely emotional multiverse event, Spider-Man: No Way Home, helped Tom Holland’s Spider-Man defeat other superheroes and be crowned the top movie character of 2022. Spider-Man: No Way Home was an event three generations in the making. The blockbuster united all three live-action movie versions of the wall-crawler, putting Holland’s younger take opposite Andrew Garfield’s The Amazing Spider-Man and Tobey Maguire’s Peter Parker from the Sam Raimi trilogy. The movie nearly broke the $2 billion mark, without premiering in China, which was an outstanding success on the level of the Avengers movies.
TV Time, an app that allows millions of users to track watched movies and vote for which character was their favorite, has revealed its list of the Top Movie Characters of 2022 with Holland’s Spider-Man in the No.1 spot. Peter’s struggles in Spider-Man: No Way Home, such as the death of Aunt May, left Holland’s character in a very vulnerable spot that appealed to audiences. That allowed Spider-Man to beat other superheroes like Robert Pattinson’s titular character from The Batman, Chris Hemsworth’s return as Thor and Benedict Cumberbatch’s Doctor Strange, the latter which also appeared in Holland’s latest Spider-Man film. Why Tom Holland’s Spider-Man Deserved To Win
Spider-Man: No Way Home can be considered lightning in a bottle, with the movie perfectly representing the entire live-action movie history of the character. Three generations of Spider-Men united to fight iconic villains from the past two cinematic franchises of the hero and Holland emerged as the best Spider-Man after the movie. Before Spider-Man: No Way Home, it was a common notion among audiences that Holland portrayed the perfect balance between Peter Parker’s dorky personality and Spider-Man’s wise-cracking attitude, while Maguire was the definition of the former and Garfield excelled at the latter. However, there was something that Holland’s Spider-Man needed before he could surpass the other versions, and Spider-Man: No Way Home gave him that.
Holland became the ultimate Spider-Man following the hardships his Peter went through in Spider-Man: No Way Home. While Spider-Man’s time in the Marvel Cinematic Universe has presented its share of emotional moments for the character, like mentor Tony Stark/Iron Man’s death, a genuine grand-scale Peter Parker struggle was amiss from the Spider-Man franchise until the latest movie. Aunt May’s death in Spider-Man: No Way Home gave the MCU’s Spider-Man his Uncle Ben moment, which audiences long asked for, and positioned Peter to end the movie alone after he asked Doctor Strange to create a spell that would have everyone forget he was Spider-Man. Peter’s sacrifices throughout the movie made Holland’s version even more sympathetic and definitely the most deserving character to win the 2022 Top Movie Character vote.
What Superheroes Could Top The List In 2023?
2023 brings many excellent choices of characters that could top the list by the end of the year, with a few superheroes poised to make the competition interesting. The new Justice League under James Gunn is still at least a couple of years away, but 2023 will see the release of four DC movies, with Michael Keaton’s returning Batman in The Flash and the possible last appearance of Jason Momoa as Aquaman in Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom making those characters front runners to take the 20223 crown. On the Marvel Studios side, a few characters like Ant-Man, Captain Marvel, and any of the Guardians of the Galaxy could top the list. Animated movie Spider-Man, Miles Morales, could keep the Spider-Man: No Way Home streak alive with his second Spider-Verse adventure as well.
