[Watch] Fans chant “Kohli, Kohli” near LSG’s dugout after SRH denied a no-ball in IPL 2023

[ad_1]

In one of the most bizarre incidents, SunRisers Hyderabad (SRH) fans chanted “Kohli, Kohli” near the Lucknow Super Giants (LSG)’s dugout during their game at the Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium on Saturday, May 13.

This came after Hyderabad were denied a no-ball off Avesh Khan’s bowling that went above the stumps during the penultimate over of SRH’s innings.

According to commentators, the crowd also threw nuts and bolts at the Lucknow team’s dugout to make the situation worse.

Watch the video below:

Reminder, never ever mess with KOHLI! 🔥

Reminder, never ever mess with KOHLI! 🔥Feel for GG morning lost the elections afternoon fan shouting kohli kohli behind his dug out. 🤣🤣 https://t.co/UPPTyneQ26

For the uninitiated, LSG have been at the heart of controversies this IPL following the infamous verbal spat between former Royal Challengers Bangalore captain Virat Kohli and Lucknow’s Afghanistan-based player Naveen-ul-Haq as well as team mentor Gautam Gambhir. The trio were fined for breaching the IPL code of conduct.

That incident took place after Bangalore beat Lucknow in a low-scoring thriller by 18 runs on May 1 at the Ekana Cricket Stadium. The social media exchange, however, continued from Naveen during RCB’s game against MI, which they lost despite posting 199.

Here are the most notable Instagram stories indirectly exchanged between Naveen and Kohli:

Kohli also shared a cryptic post as his Instagram story.

Now the fans in Hyderabad tried to take a dig at LSG on behalf of Kohli, who enjoys a huge fanbase in the country, by throwing inappropriate items in their dugout.

Heinrich Klassen and Adul Samad help SRH set 183-run target for LSG

A clinical batting performance from Heinrich Klassen and Abdul Samad helped the SunRisers Hyderabad post 182/6 on the board in their allotted 20 overs. Klassen scored 47 runs off 29 balls, including three sixes and as many boundaries. Samad also hit 37 off 25 deliveries, including four sixes and one boundary.

Meanwhile, Anmolpreet Singh, captain Aiden Markram, and Rahul Tripathi also chipped in with 36, 28, and 20 runs, respectively.

For Lucknow, captain Krunal Pandya led from the front, returning with figures of 2/24. Yudhvir Singh, Avesh Khan, Yash Thakur, and Amit Mishra scalped one wicket apiece.

“Be Abdul Samad, not Riyan Parag”

[ad_1]

Rajasthan Royals (RR) lost their game against Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) by four wickets in a last-ball thriller at the Sawai Mansingh Stadium in Jaipur on Sunday, May 7.

This came after RR pacer Sandeep Sharma failed to defend 17 runs in the last over. He had almost won the game for the Royals but then bowled a no-ball off the ultimate delivery when SRH required a four off the last ball. Abdul Samad held his nerves to hit a six to finish off the last ball to produce one of the most thrilling victories of IPL 2023.

That came even as RR posted 214/2. Jos Buttler smashed 95 off 59 balls at a strike rate of 161.02, including four sixes and 10 boundaries. Sanju Samson also hit 66 off 38 deliveries, including five maximums and four boundaries. Yashasvi Jaiswal too chipped in with 35 off 18. For SRH, Bhuvneshwar Kumar and Marco Jansen took solitary wickets.

Chasing 215, Abhishek Sharma (55 off 34) and Anmolpreet Singh (33 off 25) gave a perfect start to SRH. Rahul Tripathi (47 off 29) and Heinrich Klassen (26 off 12) kept SRH in the hunt. Glenn Phillips (25 off 70 and Abdul Samad (17 off 7) then provide a late flourish to win the game for Hyderabad.

Yuzvendra Chahal emerged as the pick of the bowlers for RR, returning with figures of 4/29. Ravichandran Ashwin and Kuldip Yadav took one wicket apiece.

Fans trolled RR and Sandeep Sharma for losing the game off the final delivery. One user tweeted:

“When life gives you an opportunity to be an uncapped player in the IPL. Be Abdul Samad, not Riyan Parag.”

Here are some of the other best Twitter reactions:

It wasn’t outstanding batting from SRH but poor bowling and fielding from RRs . #RRvsSRH

Sanju Samson backs Sandeep Sharma but laments no ball error

Sanju Samson said that he backed Sandeep Sharma to bowl the final over following his heroics against Chennai Super Kings (CSK). He, however, sounded disappointed with the no-ball as the right-arm pacer failed to execute it in the end.

Speaking in the post-match show, Samson said:

“I was confident with Sandeep (defending the final over). He has won us a game from a similar situation (against CSK). He did it again today, but that no-ball ruined our result. Sandeep knows what to do.”

He continued:

“Maybe there might be a small change in mindset for a few seconds when you feel that the job is done. Everyone was celebrating, but I think that’s the nature of this game. You can’t step the line at that point of time. With the target we posted, you can only feel happy once you win the game right. Not at all happy at the moment.”

RR will now look to return to winning ways against Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) at the Eden Gardens in Kolkata on Thursday, May 11.

When was the last time the Mumbai Indians won their opening match of an IPL season?

[ad_1]

Mumbai Indians (MI) once again failed to win their opening Indian Premier League (IPL) game this year. They lost to Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) by eight wickets at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium on Sunday, April 2.

For the uninitiated, five-time champions MI haven’t won their opening game in the T20 extravaganza under Rohit Sharma’s captaincy since 2012. That year, they beat Chennai Super Kings (CSK) by eight wickets under Harbhajan Singh’s leadership.

Since 2012, MI have lost to RCB (2013), Kolkata Knight Riders (2014 & 2015), now-defunct Rising Pune Supergiants (2016 & 2017), CSK (2018), Delhi Capitals (2019), CSK (2020), RCB (2021), and DC (2022), respectively.

Interestingly, Rohit Sharma and Co. have won their five IPL titles despite losing their opening fixture in 2013, 2015, 2017, 2019, and 2020.

The Mumbai-based franchise will now look to return to winning ways in their next IPL game against CSK at home on Saturday, April 8.

Virat Kohli and Faf du Plessis shine in their IPL 2023 opener as Tilak Varma’s 84 goes in vain

A clinical batting performance from RCB openers Virat Kohli and Faf du Plessis helped the hosts register a comprehensive eight-wicket win against Mumbai Indians on Sunday.

Kohli remained unbeaten on 82 off 49 balls, including five sixes and six boundaries. Du Plessis, on the other hand, hit 73 off 43 deliveries, including six maximums and five boundaries.

Together, the duo shared a partnership of 148 runs for the opening wicket. Glenn Maxwell also remained unbeaten on 12 off just three balls, hitting two sixes.

Earlier, Tilak Varma scored 84* off 46 balls to help MI post 171/7 in their allotted 20 overs after being asked to bat first. The southpaw hit four sixes and nine boundaries during his glittering knock.

Nehal Wadhera and Arshad Khan also contributed 21 and 15 after big guns – captain Rohit Sharma, Ishan Kishan, Suryakumar Yadav, Cameron Green, and Tim David – failed to deliver with the bat.

Karn Sharma emerged as the pick of the bowlers for RCB, finishing with figures of 2/32.

Mohammed Siraj, Reece Topley, Akash Deep, Harshal Patel, and Michael Bracewell settled for one wicket apiece.

David Warner ruled out of remaining two Tests against India in Border-Gavaskar Trophy

[ad_1]

Australia opener David Warner has been ruled out of the remaining two Tests against India in the ongoing Border-Gavaskar Trophy.

For the uninitiated, the 36-year-old suffered a concussion after the first innings of the second Test after being hit on the helmet while facing Mohammed Siraj. X-rays confirmed that the southpaw had also suffered a hairline fracture of the elbow. Matt Renshaw replaced him in the second innings for Australia.

In a statement, Cricket Australia said:

“David Warner has been ruled out of the Qantas test tour of India and will return home. Warner was struck on the elbow in the second Test in Delhi and sustained a hairline fracture.”

Warner will undergo rehabilitation to recover from his injury. He, however, is expected to return for the three-match ODI series against India in March.

“After further assessment, he will require a period of rehabilitation which will preclude any further involvement in the remainder of the Test series. It is currently anticipated that he will return to India for the three One-Day Internationals which follow the Test Series,” the statement added.

Australia have already lost fast bowler Josh Hazlewood, who has been ruled out of the tournament due to Achilles’ soreness. Meanwhile, Mitchell Starc and Cameron Green are on the path to recovery after missing the first two Tests due to finger injuries.

India and Australia squads for the remaining two Tests

KL Rahul retains place but not named vice-captain as India announce squad for last 2 Tests against Australia

[ad_1]

Struggling opening batter KL Rahul has retained his place in the Indian team for the third and fourth Tests of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2023 against Australia. Interestingly, he has not been named the vice-captain.

Left-arm pacer Jaydev Unadkat, who was released from the squad for the second Test so that he could play in the Ranji Trophy final, also makes a return for the last two games against the Aussies.

Unadkat was the Player of the Match in the Ranji Trophy final against Bengal. He claimed nine wickets as Saurashtra won the premier domestic competition for the second time.

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) announced the Indian squad for the remaining Test matches on Sunday (February 19) following the hosts’ six-wicket triumph over the Aussies in Delhi in the second Test.

As reported earlier, lead pacer Jasprit Bumrah has not been included in the squad for the remaining Tests of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2023. That’s because he continues to recuperate from the back injury that has kept him out of international cricket since September last year.

The third Test of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2023 will be played in Indore from March 1 to 5. The final match of the series will be held in Ahmedabad from March 9 to 13.

“I believe he has the quality and class to come out of this” – Team India coach backs KL Rahul

While some former Indian players like Venkatesh Prasad have called for Rahul’s sacking, Team India coach Rahul Dravid has backed the struggling opener. He asserted that the team management has faith in his talent and quality.

Speaking to the host broadcaster after India’s six-wicket win over Australia in Delhi, Dravid said:

“I think he needs to trust his processes. This is just a phase; he has been one of our most successful overseas openers. He’s got hundreds in South Africa and England; we’ll continue to back him.”

He continued:

“I believe he has the quality and class to come out of this. It is great working with this unit; managing formats is the most difficult part. But there’s not a lot of technical coaching, just simple conversations and challenging them, and giving them a pat on the back when they do well.”

A few people thinking i have something personal against KL Rahul. Infact it is the opposite. I wish well for him and playing him in such form was never going to enhance his confidence. For him to earn his place back in Test cricket, now that the domestic season has ended, cont.

“That pressure has to be there”

[ad_1]

Team India captain Rohit Sharma has revealed that he picked up some crucial tips on how to lead spinners at home in Test matches by observing his predecessor Virat Kohli. The opener stated that for spinners to make a constant impact in India, the opposition has to be kept on the back foot.

Rohit-led India hammered Australia by an innings and 132 runs in the first Test in Nagpur on Saturday, February 11. The Aussies were bundled out for 91 in their second innings as Ravichandran Ashwin claimed 5/37. In the first innings, left-arm spinner Ravindra Jadeja picked up a five-fer on his comeback as Australia folded up for 177 after winning the toss and batting first.

Asked about his captaincy philosophy with regard to leading spinners in home Tests, Rohit said at a post-match conference:

“When I was playing as a player and Virat was captaining them, I noticed that even if we don’t get a wicket, that pressure has to be there so that the opposition makes a mistake. That is something I learnt when Virat was captaining and these guys were bowling. That is what I am trying to do now. Just apply that pressure; don’t get too excited. You’ve got to keep at it.”

On the challenge of captaining quality spinners like Ashwin, Jadeja, and Axar Patel, Rohit made an interesting comparison. He opined:

“It’s like captaining Cummins, Hazlewood, Starc in Australia. Pretty similar. When you have the quality of Axar, Jadeja and Ash, having played in India for so many years, it’s always a blessing. They never disappoint.

“The conditions are there, yes, but you’ve got to come out and extract those conditions as well. They have played on such pitches a lot. So, they know exactly what to do, which areas to hit.”

While Jadeja and Ashwin dominated proceedings, Axar only managed one wicket. However, he contributed a vital 84 with the bat.

“Lot of overs have gone into his skills” – Rohit Sharma on Ashwin

While Todd Murphy claimed seven wickets for Australia on his Test debut, senior off-spinner Nathan Lyon had a poor game. He managed only one scalp in 49 overs.

On why Ashwin poses a different kind of threat in India as opposed to other spinners, Rohit attributed it to experience and skill. He elaborated:

“Ash has played so much cricket in India. He’s closing in on 100 Test matches and I am pretty sure he has played more Test matches in India. Lot of overs have gone into his skills. He can bowl the carrom ball, slider and top-spinner.

“The guy’s got everything. He’s able to extract a lot because of his skillset. He’s getting better and better you see him each time.”

Having played 89 Tests, Ashwin has claimed 457 wickets at an average of 24.05, with 31 five-wicket hauls.

Indian team informs match referee that Ravindra Jadeja was applying pain-relief cream: Reports

[ad_1]

The Indian management has issued a clarification to ICC match referee Andy Pycroft over the Ravindra Jadeja video that went viral on social media on Day 1 of the first India vs Australia Test in Nagpur. The hosts explained that the all-rounder was applying pain-relief cream to the index finger of his bowling hand in the viral clip.

Jadeja starred with a five-wicket haul on his comeback on Day 1 of the first Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2023 Test on Thursday, February 9. However, Australian media raised eyebrows after Jadeja was seen taking a substance off the back of pacer Mohammed Siraj’s palm with his right hand. The all-rounder seemed to rub the substance on the index finger of his left hand.

The incident in question occurred after Australia had lost half their side with only 120 on the board. Jadeja had claimed three of those scalps, including the big ones of Marnus Labuschagne (49) and Steve Smith (37).

According to a report in ESPNcricnfo, following the end of the opening day’s play in Nagpur, Jadeja, India captain Rohit Sharma and the team manager were shown the video clip that went viral. As per the report, Pycroft wanted to inform the Indian team about the incident and Jadeja has not been charged over the controversy.

It is believed that the Australian team also did not raise the matter with the match referee.

“It is not a rank turner” – Ravindra Jadeja opens up after Day 1 heroics

Playing in his first international match since the Asia Cup in the UAE last year, Jadeja made a successful return to the team, claiming 5/47 in 22 overs. Australia were bowled out for a disappointing 177 in 63.5 overs after winning the toss and batting first.

Despite enjoying plenty of success on the opening day of the Nagpur Test, Jadeja refused to term the surface a rank turner. He said:

“It’s not a rank turner. For a first day pitch, it was slow and there wasn’t a lot of bounce as well compared to other wickets. Defending wasn’t as difficult today for batters, but it will happen as the game progresses. That happens in most Test matches. Definitely not a rank turner.”

The 34-year-old added that he used the depth of the crease to try and unsettle the set Aussie duo of Labuschagne and Smith. The left-arm spinner elaborated:

“I was using the crease because all the deliveries were not spinning. To create doubt in the mind of batters, I was going wide of the crease and sometimes bowling from closer to the crease. I was mixing it up.”

India ended Day 1 on 77/1, with skipper Rohit unbeaten on 56 and Ravichandran Ashwin on 0.

“Like Sachin Tendulkar, VVS Laxman and Rahul Dravid” – Saba Karim on the importance of Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma in Border-Gavaskar Trophy

[ad_1]

Saba Karim wants senior batters Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma to play memorable knocks in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy, which begins in Nagpur on February 9.

The former India selector took the example of legendary Sachin Tendulkar, VVS Laxman and Rahul Dravid to explain the importance of both Virat and Rohit ahead of the four-Test series.

Speaking to India News, the cricketer-turned-commentator said:

“Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma have a chance to deliver against a top-ranked team. If they score hundreds, match-winning partnerships, they will be remembered by the upcoming generations like Sachin Tendulkar, VVS Laxman and Rahul Dravid.”

He continued:

“The duo should accept it as a challenge. They should play such innings that help India win the Test series. They should bat carefully because all bowlers will target them. I hope that they come out to bat with preparation. If they are ready to fight, runs will flow.”

So far, Kohli has amassed 1682 runs in 20 Tests against Australia, including seven centuries and five fifties.

Meanwhile, Rohit has scored 408 runs in seven Tests (all away from home), including two half-centuries. The 35-year-old, however, has hit a double ton and seven centuries against the Aussies in ODIs.

“Their roles are vital for India to reach the WTC final” – Rajkumar Sharma on Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma

Virat Kohli’s childhood coach Rajkumar Sharma believes that Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli’s roles will be vital for India to reach the World Test Championship (WTC) final.

He told India News:

“I am hoping Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli will be in form. When they get a start, they play big innings. It will be necessary throughout the series. Australia have a very good bowling attack. Rohit and Virat’s experience will be very crucial.”

Rajkumar explained how Rohit and Virat could have a dampening effect on the visitors, owing to their ability to score runs consistently.

He added:

“Their strike rates are very good. Rohit Sharma never stops his big shots. Virat also keeps the scoreboard ticking. He keeps rotating strikes and puts pressure on the opposition. Good players make the most of bad deliveries. There is the psychological pressure of Virat and Rohit on Australia. Their roles are vital for India to reach the WTC final.”

Team India are currently placed second in the WTC points table, behind Pat Cummins-led Australia.

“I’m not going to tell his name now”- Mumbai Indians coach Mark Boucher hints at new South African signing for IPL 2023

[ad_1]

IPL 2023 is a few weeks away, but it seems like Mumbai Indians coach Mark Boucher has made a new signing for the franchise ahead of the new season.

In a chat with the host broadcasters during SA20 2023, Mark Boucher subtly confirmed the new South African signing for the forthcoming IPL season.

It is unknown whether the unnamed player will play for Mumbai Indians or any other franchise. There is also a possibility of the player joining as a net bowler.

Here’s what Boucher said about IPL 2023 and the South African talent that will be on display in the competition:

“Yes, always nice to have South African flavor. We got another one. I’m not going to tell his name now, but he’s gonna be there, but the nice thing is that these guys are youngsters as well, and they are getting some good cricket time in.”

Boucher mentioned that he was looking forward to working with the likes of Duan Jansen, Tristan Stubbs and Dewald Brevis at Mumbai Indians. He added:

“They are getting good cricket time in a good competition as we have seen so far. So it’s going to be great working with Jansen and Brevis.”

Which player could Mark Boucher have approached for IPL 2023?

Multiple South African players, who remained unsold at the IPL 2023 auction have had an impressive SA20 campaign so far. Roelof van der Merwe, Bjorn Fortuin, Evan Jones, Wayne Parnell and Eathan Bosch are among the leading wicket-takers in the tournament.

JJ Smuts, Theunis de Bruyn, Leus du Plooy and Grant Roelofsen are a few of the top batters who remained unsold.

It will be interesting to see which player ends up earning an IPL contract ahead of the new season, likely to start in the last week of March.
