Nearly a year after an update from the filmmaker himself, Lucasfilm head Kathleen Kennedy is sharing what happened to Rian Johnson’s Star Wars trilogy. Johnson wrote and directed the second installment in the franchise’s sequel trilogy, 2017’s Star Wars: The Last Jedi, which infamously divided fans while scoring rave reviews from critics and becoming a box office hit. Prior to the film’s release, however, Lucasfilm had announced they would be teaming with Johnson for a new Star Wars trilogy set apart from the Skywalker Saga, though movement has been largely quiet in the years since.
In honor of her appearance at the London-based Star Wars Celebration event, Variety caught up with Lucasfilm President Kathleen Kennedy to discuss the Star Wars franchise’s future. When asked about what happened to Rian Johnson’s previously announced Star Wars trilogy, the studio head confirmed that there is no active development on it at this time due to his busy schedule, but assured that the door is open for when he’s ready. Rian and I talk all the time. He is unbelievably busy. So we’re not actively involved in anything at the moment because he’s doing another one of the ‘Glass Onion’ movies and then God knows what else. But he really wants to step back into the space. It’s a big commitment of time, so that’s really on him.
Why Now Is The Right Time For Johnson’s Star Wars Trilogy
Kennedy’s words largely echo that of Johnson’s this past August while reflecting on Star Wars: The Last Jedi‘s fifth anniversary, with the filmmaker having said he and the Lucasfilm head have remained close and that it’s just “a matter of schedule“, and that he would be heartbroken if he couldn’t return. As Kennedy notes above, the past few years have been a busy time for the Oscar nominee, who released the long-awaited Knives Out sequel, Glass Onion, this past December and murder mystery show Poker Face, both of which he is developing future installments for.
While his busy schedule may be keeping him busy for the time being, now is ultimately the right time for Johnson’s Star Wars trilogy to come to be. The vitriol from toxic fans has calmed in the years since The Last Jedi released, with some even coming around to appreciate Johnson’s efforts to break from the franchise’s typical formula following the messy bag that was The Rise of Skywalker. Having a whole trilogy written and potentially directed by one person would at least make for a more cohesive vision akin to George Lucas’ trilogies.
The other key reason many feel now is the right time for Johnson’s Star Wars trilogy to be made is the rocky state of the franchise’s movie future. This year’s Celebration did bring the announcements of three new films with the Jedi origin project written and directed by James Mangold, a movie concluding The Mandalorian and its various spin-offs and a follow-up to the sequel trilogy with Daisy Ridley’s Rey building a new Jedi Order, though with prior films’ struggles to get off the ground, including Patty Jenkins’ Rogue Squadron, it’s unclear if two of the three will move forward.
