An insurance lawyer has explained why Eddie isn’t responsible for the destruction caused by Venom in the 2018 Marvel film, Venom. Venom follows a failed reporter named Eddie (Tom Hardy), who is bonded to an alien entity. The entity is one of many symbiotes that have invaded Earth. In a twist, the being takes a liking to Earth and decides to protect it, with Eddie using its powers. The film stars Tom Hardy, Michelle Williams, Riz Ahmed, Woody Harrelson, Scott Hayes, Reid Scott, and Jenny Slate. 2018’s Venom was directed by Reuben Fleischer, with Andy Serkis stepping in to direct the sequel entry, Venom: Let There Be Carnage.
In a video released by Vanity Fair, insurance lawyer and superhero enthusiast Stacey Giulianti broke down why Eddie isn’t responsible for Venom’s destruction in the film. Giulianti said that, due to Venom possessing Eddie’s mortal body, Eddie is not liable for the damage caused by his symbiote. He added that there is even precedent that can apply to the situation.
The cited precedent is a case involving Siamese-American conjoined twins Chang and Eng Bunker. Chang is said to have gotten in a bar fight and got pinned with a battery charge. The judge did not arrest the twins, though, because Eng had done nothing wrong. Check out Stacey Giulianti’s full analysis of Venom below.
“He’s an equal part to Eddie living inside him. Eddie didn’t actually cause any of the damage himself. Venom caused the damage, which raises an interesting liability issue because if someone is carjacked and forced to be the getaway driver for a bank robbery, they’re not responsible. They did it under what we call duress. Duress is a legal term where you’re forced to do something often under the threat of violence, or you could get hurt. So to hold Eddie responsible for this seems very unlikely. No insurance company is going to say that you have liability. Now, we’re not talking about mental illness or multiple personality disorder. Courts have often found that that’s not an excuse because it’s still the same person, even if you claim to have multiple people living in you. But in this case, Eddie really does have someone else living in him. And you would say, ‘Well, we’ve never really had that situation.’ And the fact is, we did have that situation. Chang and Eng Bunker, conjoined twins, would often go out to a bar, and Chang, one-half of the conjoined twins, would drink too much and get into a bar fight. He knocked a guy out cold, committed a battery, and he was arrested. So Chang and Eng were brought before the judge, and the judge had to make a decision. Did he jail Chang, who committed a battery, but also the conjoined twin Eng, who didn’t do anything wrong, or did he let them both go? And the judge in that decision said, ‘I can’t put an innocent man in jail for this type of crime.’ And he let them both go.”
Eddie & Venom’s Relationship Got More Complicated In Let There Be Carnage
In Venom, Eddie and Venom are forced to coexist with one another, but by the end of the film, Eddie finally accepts his fate and future with the symbiote. In Venom: Let There Be Carnage, the two have a much better understanding of each other, but not before an emotional break-up between the two beings that sees Venom move out of Eddie and his home. After the rise of Carnage, Eddie goes to apologize to Venom, and the two team up to defeat the dangerous threat. Ultimately, Venom’s nature is what differentiates the symbiote from his evil counterparts, as he seeks a connection and acceptance from Eddie more than death or destruction.
Both enamored by Anne, Eddie and Venom eventually get over their differences for the greater good of humanity, which Venom had become comfortably engrossed in. Eddie had already acknowledged his bond with Venom with the infamous words, “We are Venom.” Of course, that didn’t initially fix their problems, but in Venom: Let There Be Carnage, Eddie takes things more seriously. He accepts that his life has permanently changed now that he is Venom’s host. He finally finds peace with his new reality, agreeing with Venom’s plan of becoming a superhero, which his alien companion receives with great excitement.
When Will Venom Appear Next?
Venom 3 will complete the trilogy of films following the iconic comic character, but his presence should continue to be felt inside the MCU. Avengers: Secret Wars is set to conclude the Marvel multiverse saga, and there appears to be a good chance that Venom and Eddie make an appearance, as expectations for the film are that it will be a big place for cameos from Marvel characters who are not currently part of the interconnected MCU. After Spider-Man: No Way Home‘s post-credit scene, it seems likely that Spider-Man and Venom will, one day, be face-to-face inside the MCU, as well. Venom was a strange love story of sorts, but more carnage should be in store for the aspiring superhero.
