Director Chad Stahelski is confident that his adaptation of Ghost of Tsushima can match the critical success of HBO’s The Last Of Us television series. Stahelski is set to helm a feature film adaptation of Sucker Punch Studios’ acclaimed 2020 action-adventure video game after joining the joint production between Sony Pictures and PlayStation Productions in 2021. Ghost of Tsushima tells the tale of Jin Sakai, a samurai warrior and the remaining member of Clan Sakai who stands against the invading Mongol forces during their advance on the isle of Tsushima in the 12th century.

While speaking with BroBible‘s Post-Credit Podcast to discuss John Wick: Chapter 4, Stahelski revealed that he is confident that his feature film adaptation of Ghost of Tsushima can match the quality and acclaim that The Last of Us received. The director stated that Ghost of Tsushima can potentially have a successful reception that can rival HBO’s hit The Last of Us series thanks to his placing focus on capturing the games’ themes above all else. See what Stahelski said below:

I hope that The Last of Us shines a further light on upcoming video game adaptions. Rainbow Six, Ghost of Tsushima I’m working on. Both are fantastic projects that I really hope come to fruition. But Ghost… it’s got an amazing story. It’s the anti-samurai samurai movie. It’s got great thematics. We have a lot of push on that and a lot of interest because Last of Us pushing that, yes, the curse of video game-to-movie is kind of lifted. It can be done. You’ve just got to give it love and attention. And Ghost, of probably all the other video game [movies] in development, I think that’s the one that’s going to land.

How The Last Of Us Set A New Standard For Video Game Adaptations

For many years, video game movie adaptations often fell under increased scrutiny due to how they brought popular stories to the screen. In the case of many adaptations, including Paul W. S. Anderson’s Resident Evil series, and the infamous 1993 Super Mario Bros. movie, heavy deviations from the source material drew criticism from gamers, while audiences were unable to become invested in a story where part of the source materials’ appeal came from player involvement. Due to this, Ghost of Tsushima and other recent adaptations are often faced with an uphill battle of avoiding repeating prior failures.

In comparison to prior attempts, The Last of Us attempted to please both existing video game fans and audiences by striking a balance between accuracy and bringing the video game’s narrative to screens in an accessible format. Alongside adapting The Last of Us faithfully through dialogue taken directly from the game and casting several actors involved in the original title, the HBO series also heavily emphasized the themes of regaining humanity and moving on after tragedy through new storylines. As such, The Last of Us can act as a good blueprint for Ghost of Tsushima‘s approach.

Ghost of Tsushima received critical acclaim for its story upon release, quickly becoming a favorite amongst players as a Game of the Year contender due to in part its storytelling. Stahelski’s decision to focus on recapturing the core narrative and thematic elements could prove to be the best choice in creating a film that appeals to both games and cinemagoers. Plus, with The Last of Us having shown audiences the potential of video game adaptations, more viewers unfamiliar with the PlayStation title may be more interested in giving future adaptations a chance.
