WWE continues to set new box office records, this time for a WrestleMania gate. WrestleMania 39 is shaping up to be a special show for the company.
WWE is doing everything that it can to make sure that WrestleMania 39 is a massive show, and a recent press release from the company indicates that a lot of people will be there to witness the event. Set to take place on April 1 and 2 at the SoFi Stadium in Los Angeles, the Showcase of the Immortals will likely feature some of the biggest names in WWE history, both past, and present. It’ll be a few more weeks until the WrestleMania 39 card truly starts to take place at the Royal Rumble, but that hasn’t prevented fans from showing out to buy tickets to the event now.
According to a press release from WWE, WrestleMania 39 is now the most enormous gate in company history. “WWE® (NYSE: WWE) today announced that WrestleMania Goes Hollywood (WrestleMania 39), which will originate from SoFi Stadium in Los Angeles across two nights, broke the company’s all-time gate record for any WrestleMania, despite having yet to announce a single match. The previous record announced was $17.3 million in 2016 at WrestleMania 32 at AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas.” The press release also notes that “WWE set in-market gate records for SmackDown and Raw events in more than 20 markets for the year, including the December 30 SmackDown, which took place in Tampa, Fla. and heralded the return of WWE Superstar John Cena.”
WrestleMania 39 Should Deliver On The Hype
WrestleMania 38 delivered an entertaining, if somewhat uneven, show. Several matches on the first day of the card didn’t feel like they needed to be there, and fans weren’t on board with Roman Reigns as a unified champion last April. That’s changed over the last year, as The Bloodline is quite over with live audiences, but that wasn’t the case early in 2022. WrestleMania 39 is shaping up to be an event on a totally different level. WWE reportedly still wants The Rock involved, Sami Zayn’s ongoing storyline with The Bloodline is gold, and there have been some backstage rumblings about Stone Cold Steve Austin perhaps coming back for one more match. Sprinkle in possible matches between John Cena and Theory, Edge and Dominik Mysterio, and a fresh Bray Wyatt, and there’s a lot to look forward to for WrestleMania 39.
This is the time of year when WWE generally tries to pull out all the stops, but 2023 might be different. With Vince McMahon reportedly returning to try and facilitate a sale of the company, there’s even more reason to push all the chips to the middle of the table with WrestleMania 39. It seems like this premium live event is the perfect way for WWE to flex all of its production might and drawing power. These ticket sales more a quarter of a year away from the show itself bodes well, at least in terms of how much revenue WWE will be able to generate through WrestleMania 39.
