While audiences eagerly await a proper first look at the film, star Cary Elwes is hyping up Zack Snyder’s epic Rebel Moon scale. Reuniting Snyder with 300 co-writer Kurt Johnstad and Army of the Dead co-scribe Shay Hatten, the sci-fi epic revolves around a young woman who is tasked with traveling the galaxy to find warriors to help protect a peaceful colony from a tyrannical army. Snyder has assembled a star-studded roster for Rebel Moon, including Sofia Boutella, Charlie Hunnam, Ray Fisher, Djimon Hounsou, Jena Malone, Corey Stoll, Ed Skrein, Cary Elwes and Anthony Hopkins.
Screen Rant recently spoke exclusively with Cary Elwes to discuss the sports biopic Sweetwater. When asked about his work on Zack Snyder’s Rebel Moon, the star admitted he couldn’t share much insight for what’s to come from the sci-fi film, but did express his excitement for audiences to see the film, hyping the epic scale that Snyder “knows how to do.” See what Elwes shared below:
I can’t tell you much, honestly, other than that it’s an epic film. I think that fans will just be so excited when they get a chance to see it. It’s a huge, huge movie, and Zack, as you know, knows how to do epic. So, it was a delightful experience, and I’m excited for the fans to see it. It’ll be out in Christmas, and it’s great fun.
Why Rebel Moon Is Snyder’s Biggest (& Riskiest) Movie Yet
As Elwes notes above, Snyder is well-known by now for the large scale of his projects, whether it be helping launch the DC Universe, formerly known as the DC Extended Universe, or building his own worlds with Sucker Punch and Netflix’s Army of the Dead universe. While the former was a critical and commercial failure upon its release, the latter proved to be a modest success for the streamer, building their confidence in the prequel Army of Thieves released shortly thereafter, as well as the long-gestating Army of the Dead: Lost Vegas prequel animated series and the in-development sequel.
Unlike many of his prior projects, however, Rebel Moon is already shaping up to be Snyder’s biggest and riskiest movie of his career. Where he had past experience in the zombie genre with his directorial debut on the Dawn of the Dead remake and the comic book world with both Watchmen and 300, Rebel Moon marks the filmmaker’s first proper exploration of the sci-fi genre as Sucker Punch only briefly touched upon those elements while mostly being inspired by anime and video games.
While no budget has been confirmed for the film as of yet, or its already filming sequel, much of the commentary from Rebel Moon‘s cast and crew have pointed towards the film rivalling that of Zack Snyder’s Justice League for the filmmaker’s biggest project yet. Having first found life as a Star Wars pitch before developing into his own idea, including as a potential TV show, Snyder looks to have wider-reaching plans for this new universe than any of his other works, and with Netflix reportedly looking to ramp down spending on originals, both Rebel Moon films have a high bar to clear.
