Bray Wyatt hasn’t made his televised in-ring re-debut for WWE but has been doing house shows. He reportedly picked up an injury against Jinder Mahal.
Bray Wyatt has yet to wrestle on WWE TV since returning, but he has been working house shows and reportedly picked up an injury while working with Jinder Mahal recently. The Eater of Worlds returned to the company at Extreme Rules on October 8, and his program with Uncle Howdy and LA Knight has been moving at a glacial pace. Bray Wyatt Vs. However, LA Knight is the only match confirmed for the upcoming Royal Rumble premium live event. That’s a highly anticipated bout—one sponsored by Mountain Dew, no less—so reports about him picking up an injury while working on WWE’s Holiday Tour are concerning.
In the latest edition of the Wrestling Observer Newsletter, Dave Meltzer wrote the following about Bray Wyatt: “Wyatt suffered a broken finger on his left hand in his 12/29 match with Mahal in Miami. He will likely be working through the injury as talent working with broken fingers is commonplace.” It’s unclear exactly when and how this injury occurred, but it doesn’t sound like the broken finger will significantly interfere with the Royal Rumble match against LA Knight. Working through that aliment probably isn’t fun, but it’s certainly better than breaking an ankle or getting concussed. Wyatt hasn’t wrestled since December 29, and it wouldn’t be surprising if WWE decided to keep him on the shelf until the January 28 Royal Rumble show.
Bray Wyatt Needs To Deliver At The Royal Rumble
Bray Wyatt made his highly anticipated return to WWE at Extreme Rules. Since that October 8 premium live event, all he’s done is talk and kayfabe attack the company’s employees. Fans still seem to be hooked on his storyline, involving a mysterious Uncle Howdy and a flummoxed LA Knight, but their patience might quickly run out if his match at the Royal Rumble doesn’t deliver. It’s unclear at this juncture precisely what a Pitch Black match is, and WWE could go back to the ThunderDome playbook for a cinematic match of some sort. That might leave a bad taste in audiences’ mouths, though, as they’ve waited to watch Wyatt wrestle a match since WrestleMania 37.
A more traditional bout is probably the way to go for WWE here, but it seems like the company is content with keeping fans in the dark. It’s easy to forget now, but Wyatt’s last few matches as The Fiend were poorly received, both by fans and the media. His character work has always been top-notch, but few, if any, of Bray Wyatt’s actual matches come to mind when audiences think of him. The 35-year-old still has plenty of time to change that perception, and his first opportunity to do so will arrive at the Royal Rumble. Here’s to hoping his finger doesn’t continue to hurt in a few weeks or limit what he can do in the ring with Knight. It’s an important match for both men, and WWE will do whatever it can to make things work at the premium live event.
