AEW has done everything in its power to convince fans that Mercedes Mone won’t be on Dynamite this week. Some pundits still aren’t convinced, however.
Ever since news broke that Mercedes Mone—who wrestled as Sasha Banks in WWE—would be debuting for NJPW, speculation has swirled that she’d get involved with AEW too. Saraya needing a tag-team partner to wrestle Jamie Hayter and Britt Baker on the massive January 11 episode of Dynamite only fueled that speculation. So much so that there’s a chance that Tony Khan revealed the mystery partner early, perhaps preventing the Los Angeles crowd from turning on Toni Storm when they wanted Mone. However, there is a chance that this was an act of misdirection from Khan.
Speaking on Wrestling Observer Radio on Monday, Bryan Alvarez shared his thoughts on Mone showing up Dynamite this week “I think something is happening on Wednesday, with this women’s match. I think there’s a decent chance that Mone is going to be there.” The longtime wrestling insider then explained why. “I would go so far as to say that there is zero percent chance that Britt Baker went into business for herself, calling herself ‘the boss’ on a pre-tape. Zero, ok? Clearly, she was told to do that. It’s a f—ing pre-tape! That’s why I think something is happening Wednesday. I don’t understand why you would do that if [Mone] is not coming in.” It’s also worth noting that Alvarez stated that “I think there’s a chance. I don’t have any insider information,” earlier in the segment.
What Mercedes Mone Could Do On AEW Dynamite
Bryan Alvarez also took a stab at guessing what Mercedes Mone could do on Dynamite; his idea is stellar. His thought is that the former Sasha Banks helps the other two ex-WWE performers in the match—Storm and Saraya—cheat to win. This interference would turn Baker and Hayter face and possibly see Mone, Storm, and Saraya embark on an Outsiders-style story where it’s former WWE talent against home-grown stars like Hayter and Baker. Again, this was speculation on Bryan’s part, but the idea is a fun one. If Khan has managed to ink Mone to some sort of deal, this would be a great use of her talents. AEW has been aiming to make the Los Angeles show a big one for months. Mone debuting, turning Saraya and Storm heel while creating two new massive babyface stars in Hayter and Baker would undoubtedly do that.
It’s important to keep expectations in check ahead of Wednesday’s Dynamite. As Alvarez stated, he’s speculating and isn’t working with any first-hand knowledge of Mone being signed to work with AEW. It would be fun, but that doesn’t mean what actually ends up happening on Wednesday needs to be buried by fans online. For now, fans wanting to see the former Sasha Banks wrestle again will need to wait until February 18, when NJPW heads to San Jose for Battle in the Valley.
