Why 80 For Brady Takes Place At The 2017 Super Bowl (Not 2021)

Four lifelong friends embark on a wild journey in 80 for Brady to witness a historic Super Bowl comeback and landmark moment in Brady’s career.

80 for Brady follows four best friends on a wild trip to see Tom Brady and the New England Patriots in 2017’s Super Bowl LI, rather than his most recent 2021 trip. Brady won a record seven Super Bowls in a record ten appearances during his 23-year career. His most recent Super Bowl victory came in 2021 with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. However, the women of 80 for Brady are diehard Patriots fans, and Super Bowl LI holds a special place in Tom Brady’s decorated career in New England.

SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY

The real-life “Over 80 for Brady” fan club consisted of Tom Brady superfans Elaine, Betty, Anita, Pat, and Claire, friends for over 70 years, who gathered at each other’s houses to watch every Patriots game.

In the movie, their story is distilled down into four fictional best friends played by Lily Tomlin, Jane Fonda, Rita Moreno, and Sally Field who do something the real-life fan club never got to do—attend Super Bowl LI. Tom Brady’s seventh and final Super Bowl win came with the Bucs in 2021, but it was his fifth ring that came with a ready-made Hollywood ending.

The 2017 Super Bowl Is Tom Brady’s Wildest Win With The Patriots

The New England Patriots squared off against the Atlanta Falcons in Super Bowl LI on February 5, 2017. In one of the wildest games in NFL history, Tom Brady and the Patriots overcame a 25-point deficit, down 19 points in the fourth quarter, to win in overtime 34-28. Brady holds the NFL record for most career fourth-quarter comebacks (46), but Super Bowl LI was the largest comeback of his career, not to mention the largest in Super Bowl and Patriots history. It was a football fantasy come true.

It’s only fitting that four diehard Patriots fans would take a trip to see Tom Brady in one of his six Super Bowl victories with New England, and the filmmakers of 80 for Brady couldn’t have written a more dramatic Hollywood ending. The historic comeback sets Super Bowl LI apart from Brady’s six other titles as a landmark moment in sports. Director Kyle Marvin explains the significance of this game (via THR):

We knew we weren’t going to alter history or surprise anyone with the outcome of the game. But football also has a lot to do with what people are experiencing while watching it. If you ask, ‘Hey do you remember Super Bowl LI?’ they inevitably will not tell you about the game but where they were and who they were with. Our film is a story that happens at the same time as the game — and our goal is to line up the journey of the football game with the journey of these women.”

How Many Super Bowls Tom Brady Played In (& Won) After 80 For Brady

80 for Brady’s talented cast ends up attending Super Bowl LI, but Tom Brady wasn’t done in New England. In February 2019 Brady led the Patriots to a 13-3 victory over the Los Angeles Rams in Super Bowl LIII, marking his sixth title. It was new team, same Brady in February 2021 as he won his astounding seventh Super Bowl title in his first season with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, making him one of only two quarterbacks in NFL history to win a Super Bowl with two different teams (the other being Peyton Manning with Indianapolis and Denver).

Tom Brady has been up to quite a bit on and off the field since his memorable 2017 Super Bowl LI victory, including signing on to 80 for Brady as a producer with his company 199 Productions. Brady even makes a cameo alongside some of his former teammates, including Rob Gronkowski, but it’s what the team accomplished in real life that truly sets the stage for four friends’ journey of a lifetime in 80 for Brady.
