Avengers: Endgame directors Joe and Anthony Russo wrap filming on their latest Netflix movie, set to star Stranger Things’ Millie Bobby Brown.
Avengers: Endgame directors Joe and Anthony Russo have officially wrapped filming on their new Netflix movie, The Electric State, set to feature Stranger Things star Millie Bobby Brown. Based on Simon Stålenhag’s graphic novel of the same name, The Electric State is a sci-fi adventure film currently planned to be released on Netflix in early 2024. Boasting an all-star cast, Brown is joined by the likes of Chris Pratt, Ke Huy Quan, Stanley Tucci and Jason Alexander. Giancarlo Esposito, Anthony Mackie, and Billy Bob Thornton are also set to lend their voices to the project as well.
Taking to Instagram, the Russo brothers’ production company AGBO recently announced the end of filming and expressed their gratitude toward the film’s cast and crew.
Originally slated to be directed by The Flash’s Andy Muschietti, the Russo brothers took over the reins on the project once they completed work on last year’s The Gray Man. With a reported budget of $200 million, this latest project looks set to become another blockbuster release for the siblings who have been busy pursuing their own projects since their time in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
What We Know About The Electric State
Stålenhag’s original graphic novel follows the story of a teenage runaway and her toy robot as they traverse a very different version of the United States. Depicting a landscape littered with trash and discarded battle drones, the world of The Electric State is one in which society is on the verge of collapse due to unfettered consumerism. Created by the same author behind Tales From The Loop, the Netflix adaptation is expected to provide audiences with some mind-bending and unique visuals.
Adapted for the screen by Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame writers Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely, the film has suffered its fair share of setbacks since plans were first announced in 2017. Aside from Muschietti stepping away from the director’s chair, Everything Everywhere All At Once’s Michelle Yeoh was originally slated to appear but also had to step away due to scheduling conflicts. Then tragically, in November last year, a crew member was killed in an off-set car accident, prompting the production to briefly shut down for a time.
At the time of writing, no release date has been set by Netflix for The Electric State, leaving the Russo brothers plenty of time to guide the film through its all-important post-production phase. While the extent of visual effects the finished film will require is not yet known, given the story’s sci-fi premise and the Russo’s own prior experience, it will likely necessitate a good deal of post-production work. In the meantime, with The Electric State wrapping production, Brown is now free to return to the role of Eleven with filming on Stranger Things season 5 also set to begin in a few months’ time.
