Exclusive: Director Christopher Landon discusses Happy Death Day 3 and why he wants to make a Happy Death Day and Freaky crossover movie.
Christopher Landon gives an update on Happy Death Day 3 and explains why he wants to do a crossover between Happy Death Day and Freaky. Happy Death Day has gained an impressive following, culminating in Happy Death Day 2U and potentially a third installment in the horror comedy franchise. Both Freaky and Happy Death Day explore horror through traditionally comedic situations, such as body swapping and time loops, while bucking the classic tropes of both genres.
In an exclusive interview with Screen Rant for his new movie, We Have A Ghost, Landon discusses Happy Death Day 3 and his hopes for a Happy Death Day and Freaky crossover. He shared an update on the status of Happy Death Day 3, referring to it as “a real thing.” Landon also said he is interested in making a Happy Death Day/Freaky crossover, but explained he doesn’t have a plot fully formed yet.
Happy Death Day is one of my favorite franchises. If you were to do a third Happy Death Day or even a crossover with Freaky, what would you like to explore? Kathryn Newton said that she would be completely up for doing the crossover film. What do you say about that?
Christopher Landon: Look, I can only say I’ve had an idea for Happy Death Day 3 for a while. It’s been pitched to everyone, so that’s a real thing.
The Happy Death Day/Freaky crossover is more just the fantasy of getting to work with Jessica Rothe and Kathryn together in one film. And I just think, tonally, they would blend well together. But in terms of what that plot actually looks like? I don’t know yet.
What Could A Happy Death Day & Freaky Crossover Look Like?
Horror comedy is a wildly popular subgenre of horror, with the box office success of M3GAN, Scream V, and The Menu proving audiences connect with this unique balance of storytelling. Landon has found great success with Happy Death Day and Freaky by subverting the expectations of both comedy and horror tropes. Happy Death Day 2U perfectly sets up a third installment, and with an idea already fully mapped out by Landon, it could happen sooner rather than later.
It seems Landon’s desire to make a crossover between Happy Death Day and Freaky is rooted more in the talent he could bring together than the story itself. Landon makes an excellent point about the worlds of Happy Death Day and Freaky meshing well tonally, not only because of the horror-comedy element but the sci-fi/fantasy element as well. Both movies take traditionally comedic science fiction tropes, living through a time loop and body swapping, and explore them in horror.
A crossover between the two franchises could further flesh out these strange sci-fi aspects of the world, spawning a full universe even beyond Happy Death Day and Freaky. While a crossover would be fun, it doesn’t seem nearly as likely as a third installment in the Happy Death Day franchise. Jason Blum recently gave a disappointing update on “Freaky Death Day,” telling fans not to get their hopes up, but he did add that anything is possible.
