Following the cancellation of the Batgirl movie and the Doom Patrol TV show, Brendan Fraser is open to returning to DC Studios for future projects.

Following the cancellation of Batgirl and Doom Patrol, Brendan Fraser is open to returning to DC Studios. 2022 was a massive change to the status quo for Warner Bros.’s many DC properties. After the Warner Bros. Discovery merger was completed, the studio made the controversial decision to cancel the Batgirl movie. Despite having finished principal photography, the HBO Max product was axed. On the television side, HBO Max is losing both Titans and Doom Patrol, as they will both end after their respective season 4 this year. One talent that Batgirl and Doom Patrol had in common was the involvement of Fraser.

While Fraser starred as Robotman in the Doom Patrol series, he was set to play the DC for Firefly in the Batgirl movie. As bittersweet as it was for Fraser to lose both DC gigs, the recently Academy-Award-nominated star is still open to returning to the superhero realm. In an interview with Variety, Fraser opened up about the possibility of collaborating with DC Studios in the future. According to Fraser, “everything’s contingent on what it’s about — the role,” sharing the following:

Maybe. Everything’s contingent on what it’s about — the role. I mean, a job is not easy to do no matter who is producing it. I just finished up with Doom Patrol, which is also a DC property. That’s a unique cast and conceit, and I loved that Riley Shanahan — the actor who wore all the gear — and I would just do the voice, I could do my job in my long johns, and nobody would know because I was in a recording studio. So it was the best day job ever. Apart from that, I’m open to it.

Where Brendan Fraser Could Fit Into James Gunn’s DC Universe

Brendan Fraser On How Studio Politics Cost Him 2000s Superman Role

As of right now, James Gunn and Peter Safran have not revealed any specific new actors that they are looking to add to the DC Universe. The co-CEOs only revealed the first half of DC movies and TV shows slate in late January, meaning casting will come later. Many projects had been axed before and after DC Studios’ launch. However, Gunn has been vocal about being open to working with actors who have already been in DC properties.

While Batgirl and Doom Patrol may never be revived as part of DC Studios, that doesn’t mean Fraser couldn’t keep playing those characters. Whether it would be Firefly or Robotman, the DC Universe could always use those characters in the new continuity that is being set up. Given the multiverse angle that DC is leaning more into, Fraser could easily play a new version of his Batgirl or Doom Patrol characters. Fraser could obviously also be tapped for any other DC hero or villain that Gunn and Safran are planning to cast in the DC Universe.

Since none of the new DC Universe projects haven’t gotten started yet, there is plenty of time for DC Studios to find Fraser a role within the franchise. With someone of Fraser’s caliber of acting, it wouldn’t be shocking if DC Studios eyes a return for the Hollywood star sooner rather than later. While Batgirl and Doom Patrol may be finished chapters in Fraser’s career, it will hopefully not be his final time working with the DC Universe.
