Disney and Lucasfilm are planning to “ramp up” Star Wars, potentially meaning more movies – but financial constraints will still apply.
Disney’s worsening financial position is forcing a change of strategy, but reports suggest Lucasfilm still intend to “ramp up” Star Wars – with new movies too. When Disney acquired Lucasfilm back in 2012, the plan was to release at least one new Star Wars movie every year. The box office failure of Solo: A Star Wars Story, coupled with the poor popular and critical reaction to Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker, changed those plans. Since then, Lucasfilm’s focus has been on establishing Star Wars as a major transmedia franchise, with a focus on streaming content such as The Mandalorian, Obi-Wan Kenobi and Andor on Disney+. This has been a tremendous success; but it now seems there will indeed be a push for new Star Wars movies as part of Disney’s company-wide restructure.
Returning Disney CEO Bob Iger faces major problems at Disney, and he is pushing for more fiscal discipline in the various studios. Despite this, THR report Disney is “ramping up” its effort to bring Star Wars back to the big screen. In spite of that, insider sources indicated there will still be financial pressures; “Lucasfilm may ramp up, but it will have to abide by the same fiscal discipline as the rest of the company,” one commented. This speaks to the larger company mandate of pushing out less content a year while ensuring that quality can be maintained with strong returns. Although that mentality will still be present for Star Wars movies, it helps that they’ve essentially been the exception to the rule the last few years.
Star Wars Has The Opposite Problem Of Marvel Studios
Lucasfilm has the opposite problem to Marvel Studios, where president Kevin Feige announced a Phase 5 release slate that has been forced to slow down; this allows more time to spent improving the product in post-production, but should also reduce costs. In contrast, Lucasfilm’s theatrical absence means the studio has more freedom to “ramp up” new Star Wars movies. Star Wars TV shows may release often on Disney+, but not with the same frequency as the MCU.
Although Lucasfilm has room to start making movies again – with reports of pre-production from Damon Lindelof and Taika Waititi respectively – it will still be within the new financial parameters Disney is now focused on maintaining. Disney is now going to be focused less on quantity and more on quality, especially with these major brands. Whether it’s the MCU, Star Wars, or any other project, this will help Disney’s costs while hopefully giving them more returns across the board with stronger offerings overall.
That being said, Star Wars shows will still be releasing in 2023, including The Mandalorian season 3, Ahsoka, and Skeleton Crew. However, it will be exciting to see the galaxy far, far away back in theaters again. While it’s unknown what or when Lucasfilm’s next theatrical Star Wars release will be, more details will likely be revealed at London’s Star Wars Celebration 2023 this April.
