Filmmaker James Cameron says he actually relates to Thanos’ controversial plan in Avengers: Infinity War and thinks it was a viable answer.
Director James Cameron revealed he can actually relate to Thanos’ genocide plan in Avengers: Infinity War. The filmmaker may have criticized the larger Marvel Cinematic Universe before, but it sounds like he’s aware of the bigger story beats in the franchise. That includes Thanos’ motivation in Avengers: Infinity War. What’s more surprising is that Cameron revealed he agrees with the Titan’s way of thinking.
Speaking with Time on the heels of the success of Avatar: The Way of the Water — the long-awaited sequel to his massive hit, Avatar — the filmmaker talked about the movie’s environmental message. That led to a discussion of the MCU, given Thanos’ motivation in Avengers: Infinity War was tied to the idea of the depletion of resources. Interestingly, Cameron revealed he supports the Thanos’ genocide plan — the one the Avengers worked so hard to stop. Read the director’s full quote below:
“I can relate to Thanos. I thought he had a pretty viable answer. The problem is nobody is going to put up their hand to volunteer to be the half that has to go.”
Why Thanos Was Such A Great MCU Villain
Cameron isn’t the first Hollywood celebrity to empathize with Thanos’ motivations in Avengers: Infinity War. Back in 2018, Rocket Raccoon voice actor, Bradley Cooper, actually defended the Titan, saying the villain has a point. Ultimately, however, Thanos’ plan is wrong. Regardless of his motivations, he cannot play god and decide the fate of the universe.
Ironically, this is what makes Thanos such a great MCU antagonist, although Killmonger is still the best MCU villain. The Titan’s motivation in Avengers: Infinity War opened up a lot of conversation about the matter, and while the Avengers were still the hero of the narrative, it was refreshing to see Marvel Studios come up with an equally interesting bad guy. Thanos wasn’t trying to take over the universe because of greed. He truly believed in his cause.
Since Marvel Studios waited until the tail end of the Infinity Saga, Avengers: Infinity War, to properly introduce Thanos, the MCU didn’t have much time to further explore the character. Luckily, this is something they won’t have a problem with in the Multiverse Saga thanks to Ant-Man & the Wasp: Quantumania already introducing Kang the Conquerer — who fans are already rooting for.
