Evil Dead‘s Bruce Campbell wishes everyone a happy Ash Wednesday on social media. Campbell served as the lead protagonist of the original Sam Raimi-directed trilogy as Ash Williams who fights off the demonically-possessed creatures known as Deadites. After the sequel series Ash vs. Evil Dead ended after three seasons, Campbell is now technically retired from the role, and the upcoming film Evil Dead Rise is expected to be the first not to feature his character.
Now, on Ash Wednesday, Bruce Campbell is taking to Twitter to wish everyone a happy holiday from his family at Evil Dead Rise and in turn, making the holiday his character’s own. Check out his post below:
Campbell’s post is a cheeky recognition of the fact that his Evil Dead protagonist shares a name with the Christian holiday that marks the first day of Lent and involves the practice of spreading ash on the forehead in the shape of a cross.
What To Expect From Evil Dead Rise
Though Campbell won’t be returning as Ash, the actor remains on board Evil Dead Rise as an executive producer. Written and directed by Lee Cronin, the upcoming film follows a story that is largely unrelated to previous installments. Lily Sullivan and Alyssa Sutherland star as estranged sisters Beth and Ellie who reunite in a cramped Los Angeles apartment where the two siblings and Ellie’s three kids are met with the rise of Deadites and thrust into a primal battle for survival. The contained horror film also stars Morgan Davies, Gabrielle Echols, and Nell Fisher in supporting roles.
Evil Dead Rise‘s runtime clocks in at the longest yet in the horror franchise’s history at 96 minutes. Though the upcoming film may be deviating from the Evil Dead franchise in a few ways, its new cramped apartment setting is looking to recapture the claustrophobic feeling of the original cabin. Cronin seems to have succeeded, as Raimi himself praised the film as “terrifying.” Originally intended for a release on HBO Max, Evil Dead Rise releases in theaters on April 21.
