Ben Affleck and Matt Damon have responded to the bizarre pitch for a Good Will Hunting sequel. The 1997 film was the first major breakthrough for Affleck and Damon, who wrote the script together and starred in the film, with Damon playing the titular Will Hunting and Affleck portraying his pal Chuckie Sullivan. Affleck and Damon also won an Academy Award for Best Original Screenplay for their work on the film.
While walking the red carpet for their new film Air, Damon was asked by Variety about the craziest movies he’s been pitched recently, and the actor responded by saying that someone had tried to pitch Affleck a Good Will Hunting sequel. The idea made Damon laugh hysterically and while the pitch was apparently genuine, Affleck and Damon clearly did not treat it as such and did not make it seem like it was an idea they would be considering seriously any time soon. Damon: Someone just tried to pitch Ben ‘Good Will Hunting 2′. I sh*t you not — that happened. He told me today. He was like, ‘You’re not going to believe what I heard.’ This was a flat-out sequel. I don’t get it.
Affleck: Matt is always telling stories that he should not be telling. It’s not a sequel we’re going to pursue.
Why A Good Will Hunting Sequel Is Not Possible
When they wrote the movie, Affleck and Damon were sharing a bank account and living lives a lot closer to the blue-collar ones their characters have in the film. The film launched the careers of two of the biggest movie stars in the world. The hardscrabble, gritty originality that made the Good Will Hunting script so good might be difficult to replicate now following years of sustained success.
The Weinstein Company tried to launch a Good Will Hunting TV series back in 2013, but those plans eventually fell through and there have not been any discussions since. Damon and Affleck, who originally wanted Kevin Smith to direct Good Will Hunting, did come together to do an absurd parody of a sequel titled Good Will Hunting 2: Hunting Season in cameo roles for Smith’s 2001 film Jay And Silent Bob Strike Back, during which they play fictionalized versions of themselves on set.
In an age of remakes and sequels, Good Will Hunting stands out as a rare classic film that remains a standalone, and for good reason. The way the film ended, with Will going off to California to “see about a girl” and Robin Williams’ Dr. Sean Magiure taking a sabbatical, didn’t leave much space for a continuation of the story. It is also tough to imagine a sequel without Williams, who brought a certain reverence to the film and set. Williams actually ad-libbed one of Good Will Hunting‘s best scenes, with his absence makes a sequel very unlikely.
