Talking to The Hollywood Reporter, Lionsgate Motion Picture Group president Joe Drake suggested they are pushing hard to make a fifth film happen, saying the John Wick: Chapter 4 ending can be interpreted “in different ways.” Drake also said Reeves and director Chad Stahelski will take time off before considering ideas for John Wick 5, which is not guaranteed, but something the studio is open to. Read what Drake said below:

There’s a will and there’s an openness. And you could certainly interpret that ending in different ways. We’re all going to take a tiny rest here and then scratch at ideas about whether there’s a credible way to get into five. But there’s no guarantee. Keanu and Chad, rightly so, are very protective about never screwing with the audience. So we certainly have our work cut out for us … Keanu is so beloved and that character is so beloved; that’s not lost on him. He is in Ballerina, interestingly, in a very strategic ways. And we’re talking about a couple of others that he could certainly participate in. I know that Chad has a bunch of really cool ideas. You could certainly go earlier [with the story].

Could John Wick 5 Really Happen After Chapter 4’s Ending?

Stahelski, who has directed all four John Wick movies, originally intended to film the fourth and fifth films back-to-back, though that plan was scrapped once they decided on Chapter 4‘s ending. Stahelski and Reeves have made comments suggesting Chapter 4‘s ending is conclusive and John Wick is dead. However, his body is never shown, and the final moments allow for just enough ambiguity to bring the Baba Yaga back. However, a fake-out death could risk undermining the emotional impact of the ending as Wick reflects on his life and marriage before peacefully succumbing to his injuries.

Stahelski has also made comments suggesting that Lionsgate did not approve of Chapter 4‘s ending killing off John Wick, so it’s no surprise the studio is now trying to work around it and pushing for John Wick 5 despite the character’s conclusive death. Regardless of John Wick’s fate, Reeves will be returning as the assassin in the Ana de Armas-led spinoff Ballerina, which is set between the third and fourth chapters and is expected to hit theaters next year.
