Gone Girl star Emily Ratajkowski opens up about quitting acting due to mistreatment in Hollywood. The supermodel appeared in a few high-profile music videos, including Robin Thicke’s “Blurred Lines,” before making her feature film debut in David Fincher’s Gone Girl as a student having an affair with Ben Affleck’s professor. Ratajkowski went on to star in the films We Are Your Friends, Cruise, I Feel Pretty, and Welcome Home alongside Aaron Paul, though she hasn’t acted in a film since 2019’s Lying and Stealing.
In a new interview with the Los Angeles Times, Ratajkowski opened up about why she quit acting, mainly because of mistreatment by men in Hollywood. Ratajkowski went into depth about how Hollywood is “fucked up,” did not value her as an artist, and objectified her. Read some of her comments below:
I didn’t feel like, “Oh, I’m an artist performing and this is my outlet.” I felt like a piece of meat who people were judging, saying, “Does she have anything else other than her [breasts]?” Maybe that’s why right now I’m not really interested in men’s POVs. Because they were lies. And I don’t mean infidelity. This is a fucked up world. Like, Hollywood is fucked up. And it’s dark.

After her supporting performance in Gone Girl garnered praise, Ratajkowski and her team started to seek out parts to prove she was a “serious actress with longevity.” She did find some success with more supporting roles, though she did not feel like Hollywood valued her as an artist. Instead, she felt like finding success as an actor was dependent on making herself “digestible to powerful men in Hollywood.”
As a result, Ratajkowski fired her whole team, including her acting agent, commercial representative, and manager. She said of her team, “I didn’t trust them. I can handle receiving phone calls. I’m gonna make these decisions. None of you have my best interest at heart. And you all hate women.” Though Ratajkowski basically quit acting, she did continue auditioning for roles, including in the Best Picture-nominated film Triangle of Sadness, losing out on the role of Yaya to the late Charlbi Dean.
One major experience the Gone Girl breakout had that turned her off from Hollywood was a party she attended with her now-estranged husband, Uncut Gems producer Sean Bear-McClard. In an essay from her book My Body, Ratajkowski remembers being in a room full of men who were friendly with convicted rapist Harvey Weinstein and encouraged “their young female clients to take meetings with him in hotel rooms.” Ratajkowski is currently embroiled in a contentious divorce and custody battle with Bear-McClard, who has been accused of sexual misconduct by multiple women.
