In an interview with Entertainment Tonight, Black reveals that he is planning a 20th anniversary reunion for the cast of School of Rock. The reunion will likely follow the pattern of the 10th anniversary reunion that was held in Austin, Texas, in 2013. That reunion saw Black, director Richard Linklater, writer Mike White, and most of the original young cast members attend a red carpet screening of the film. Now, Black expresses his excitement at seeing the cast after 20 years Check out his statement below:

All those kids — dig this — they were 10 years old when we made that movie and now they’re all, like, 30. We’re gonna get together and have a 20-year anniversary. We like to jam. I’m looking forward to seeing all of the grownups from ‘School of Rock.’

School of Rock’s Legacy, Explained

Given that School of Rock never received an official sequel, it is encouraging to see Black putting an effort into remembering and celebrating the iconic film and its talented cast. However, in addition to the reunions, the film has found other ways to carry on its legacy. One of the biggest ways it has done this is by becoming a Broadway rock musical. The School of Rock musical made its Broadway debut in 2015. However, in the years since, the show has also been performed in the West End and has mounted tours across many regions.

In addition to the Broadway musical, Nickelodeon also released a School of Rock TV series in 2016. The series was a remake of the original School of Rock instead of a direct sequel. It provided a more in-depth take on the story of Finn (Tony Cavalero) inspiring a group of music students by exploring the students’ growth as musicians and delving into their personal relationships and problems. The series enjoyed a three-season run before concluding in 2018.

While School of Rock has found unique ways to carry on its legacy, some remain hopeful of a true sequel coming to fruition someday. Rumors of a sequel first began in 2008, but by 2012, Black had sadly announced that the sequel likely wouldn’t happen, as he, Linklater, and White couldn’t all get on the same page to plan one. However, he still gets asked frequently about a sequel, and recently jokingly confirmed School of Rock 2 was in the works. Even though a sequel may not happen, School of Rock has found other mediums to continue its story and remains a beloved classic even 20 years after its release.
