Rachel Weisz, Brendan’s Fraser’s co-star in The Mummy franchise, reveals she reached out to congratulate him following his Oscar win for Best Actor in The Whale. Why Rachel Weisz Should Return For The Mummy 4
With Fraser’s recent Oscar win serving as a highlight of his ongoing career resurgence, many viewers are now calling for the star to return to his role of Rick O’Connell for a potential The Mummy 4. Even Fraser himself has expressed enthusiasm for the idea and has confirmed he would be happy to return “if someone came up with the right conceit.” Yet if The Mummy 4 is ever to come to pass, Weisz’s involvement would also be essential for its success.
The exact reason behind her decision not to return for The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor is unclear. While Weisz herself has intimated that her decision ultimately came down to scheduling conflicts, other reports have also cited everything from problems she had with the film’s script, to a desire to scale back work in the wake of her son’s birth. Regardless of Weisz’s rationale, her presence in the third film was sorely missed.
Though Bello did an admirable job of filling in for Weisz, the onscreen chemistry that Fraser had developed with his original co-star over the previous two films was a big part of what made them so endearing in the first place. The move to recast the character only served to further alienate audiences in a film that already had its fair share of narrative issues. With any luck, The Mummy franchise might get a chance to make up for these mistakes by bringing back Weisz as the original intrepid adventurer.
