Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat is being adapted into a brand new movie. The musical, which features music by Andrew Lloyd Webber and a book and lyrics by Tim Rice, originally premiered in 1972. It is a musical adaptation of a story from the Bible’s Book of Genesis, about Joseph and his 11 brothers and the way a coat of many colors changes their destinies.
Per Deadline, Amazon Studios is mounting a new film adaptation of Joseph with director Jon M. Chu of 2021’s In the Heights and the upcoming Wicked movie musical. He will be re-teaming with his In the Heights producer Scott Sanders for the project. Although a feature-length version of Joseph starring Donny Osmond was released in 1999, that was a recording of a staged version so this will be the first properly cinematic outing for the show.

So far, not many films have been adapted from Webber’s stage works, and even fewer have been well-received. While 1973’s Jesus Christ Superstar, 1996’s Evita, and 2004’s The Phantom of the Opera have mixed fans and detractors, the most recent outing for the theater icon was 2019’s Cats. That film was a box office flop and received widespread derision from critics and audiences alike, earning a 19 percent score on Rotten Tomatoes.
However, Chu is the perfect director to turn the tide of Webber adaptations. While he has already proven his musical chops by adapting Lin-Manuel Miranda’s In the Heights, he has also shown a deep facility for spectacle. This was perhaps best exemplified by his 2018 outing Crazy Rich Asians, which wowed audiences with its opulent production design.
Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat is a project that inherently needs to be drenched in color and exuberant energy. While the first images from Wicked haven’t been released yet, between In the Heights and Crazy Rich Asians, Chu has proven he is more than up to the task. It remains to be seen if the film will be embraced by the Webber fandom at large, but this news gives it a huge boost toward potentially meeting their expectations.
