Actor Chris Pratt celebrates The Super Mario Bros. Movie success in a new video. The blockbuster animated video game adaptation stars Pratt as the fearless plumber Mario. When his brother Luigi (Charlie Day) is inadvertently sent to the Dark Lands, he is captured by Bowser (Jack Black), the ruthless leader of the Koopa race. To free his brother and protect the peaceful Mushroom Kingdom from Bowser’s invading army, Mario must partner with notable characters from the iconic video game franchise, including Donkey Kong (Seth Rogen), Princess Peach (Anya Taylor-Joy), and Toad (Keegan-Michael Key).
Pratt recently took to Instagram to celebrate The Super Mario Bros. Movie‘s resounding success, showcasing a large metal coin (modeled after its in-game design) gifted from the studio.
While presenting the gift, Pratt shares a touching story from his youth when he would raid a local wishing well to use at the arcade to play Mario Bros. The actor shares his pride in playing the iconic character and then jokingly bites into the gold coin, hurting his teeth.
The Super Mario Bros. Movie Continues a Promising Hollywood Trend
Following its opening five-day run, The Super Mario Bros. Movie earned over $120 million at the box office. By April 11, the animated video game adaptation took home a whopping $434.5 million worldwide. With the film set to surpass 2016’s Warcraft total haul of $439 million, The Super Mario Bros. Movie became the highest-grossing video game movie of all-time.
Although theatrical video game adaptations have historically been critical and commercial failures, recent releases have indicated that the Hollywood trend has finally broken, and a new pattern may have begun. Pokémon Detective Pikachu, Sonic the Hedgehog, its 2022 sequel, Rampage, and Tom Holland’s Uncharted have shown the financial potential for a proper video game adaptation. With HBO’s television adaptation of PlayStation’s The Last of Us captivating audiences around the world, Hollywood studios have tapped several of the top video game franchises for future projects to include Ghost of Tsushima, God of War, and Gran Turismo.
As The Super Mario Bros. Movie has performed exceptionally well, Nintendo and Illumination will likely produce a direct sequel as well as a variety of spinoffs. The film’s post-credits sequence teases a potential follow-up with an iconic character while stars Rogen and Day expressed their desire to star in Donkey Kong and Luigi solo movies, respectively. With The Super Mario Bros. Movie taking hold of the box office, audiences are witnessing the inception of another long-running cinematic franchise.
