New footage from Disney’s The Little Mermaid remake has been shared in the form of a new behind-the-scenes featurette, revealing more recreated moments and songs from the original. Directed by Rob Marshall, The Little Mermaid serves as a live-action remake of Disney’s 1989 animated movie of the same name. The remake sees Halle Bailey take on the role of Ariel this time around, chronicling the mermaid’s attempts to explore the surface world by making a deal with a nefarious sea witch.
Ahead of The Little Mermaid’s release date next month, Walt Disney Studios has released a new look at the film, showing off more live-action recreations of iconic moments from the animated original.
The latest featurette, as seen above, focuses a lot on what Bailey brings to the movie as Ariel, featuring more of the actor’s impressive singing voice. The video also reveals more detailed looks at certain recreated scenes, including Ariel and Eric’s (Jonah Hauer-King) iconic boat ride during the “Kiss the Girl” song.
How The Little Mermaid Updates The Animated Original Movie
Like all of Disney’s previous live-action remakes, including Mulan, The Lion King, and Pinocchio, The Little Mermaid is maintaining many aspects of the original while also blazing some new ground. One of the most notable updates to the original film is making the cast more diverse. Many animated Disney classics are dominated by white characters and, with Bailey’s casting and the casting of several non-white supporting actors as well, The Little Mermaid represents an important 21st-century update.
In keeping with the film’s better representation, some of The Little Mermaid‘s songs have been updated as well to make them more appropriate for modern audiences. “Kiss the Girl,” in particular, has had an update to remove language that doesn’t reflect modern ideals regarding consent. “Poor Unfortunate Souls” has also had an update, changing lines that previously could be considered to encourage women to not speak out of turn.
Bailey has also previously mentioned that Ariel’s motivations for leaving the sea now go beyond her love of Eric and are more deeply tied to the character’s desire for freedom. Despite all of these changes, however, the latest featurette suggests that the spirit of the original movie may remain intact. It remains to be seen how audiences will receive The Little Mermaid remake, but they can at least now rest assured that care is being taken to faithfully recreate beloved aspects of the original.
