According to the fan theory, Jar Jar Binks is more than the comic relief character he seems, using his bumbling personality to disguise the fact that he was actually a Sith Lord all along. The theory justifies his otherwise inconsequential presence in the prequels by highlighting details like his Force-user-like “skills” and Sith-yellow eyes. Darth Jar Jar is one of the wildest theories in Star Wars, and this cosplayer clearly had fun bringing it to life at Star Wars Celebration this year. The Darth Jar Jar Theory Has Always Been Fun – But Unlikely!
The full theory cites many instances of Jar Jar’s seemingly meaningless goofy behavior and interprets them as much more sinister, from teaching young Anakin to disregard authority to securing Palpatine’s power in the Senate. Allegedly, Jar Jar was meant to be the prequels’ big villain, but the plan changed after the character was criticized as too annoying. Admittedly, the Darth Jar Jar Binks theory makes a little sense, and George Lucas said that Jar Jar’s role in The Phantom Menace was significant to the trilogy, but as far as confirmation goes, the theory will probably remain just that- purely theoretical.
Though the Darth Jar Jar Binks theory has never been substantiated in Star Wars canon, it’s been popular among the fanbase for years. Part of the theory’s longevity and popularity can be attributed to the new love being shown to the prequel trilogy after enduring years of criticism. Recent projects have seen both Hayden Christensen and Ahmed Best return to Star Wars, whose portrayals of Anakin Skywalker and Jar Jar have been given newfound respect. As the prequel trilogy’s target audience has grown up, many characters have been reevaluated, including Jar Jar Binks and his potential as a Sith Lord.
It seems clear this theory won’t be adopted into Star Wars canon. The perfect opportunity to do so would have been in Star Wars: The Clone Wars, but Jar Jar’s appearances were consistent with his portrayal in the prequels. The final nail in the Darth Jar Jar theory’s coffin was the sequel trilogy’s avoidance of any mention of him. If Jar Jar was truly as formidable as the theory suggested, he’d have been an excellent character to bring back in the sequels. Star Wars cosplay might be the only opportunity for fans to see Darth Jar Jar Binks in real life, and Star Wars Celebration certainly didn’t disappoint!
