The Red, White, & Royal Blue film adaptation now has an official release date and a new poster. The project is adapted from the 2019 novel of the same name by Casey McQuiston, which follows Alex Claremont-Diaz, the son of the President of the United States, as he falls in love with his rival, Prince Henry of England. The film, which was directed by playwright Matthew Lopez, stars Taylor Zakhar Perez as Alex and Nicholas Galitzine as Prince Henry alongside an ensemble cast that includes Uma Thurman, Clifton Collins Jr., Stephen Fry, Sarah Shahi, Rachel Hilson, and Ellie Bamber.
This week on the official Red, White, & Royal Blue on Prime Twitter account, they shared the first teaser poster for the film.
The poster perfectly encapsulates the loving rivalry between the lead characters, featuring their feet interlocked while wearing socks emblazoned with their countries’ flags. The poster also announces that the film will premiere on Prime Video on August 11.
August is the Perfect Time for the Red, White, & Royal Blue Movie
If a studio has an LGBTQ+ romance coming out in the summer, it might seem most obvious to give it a release date in June during Pride Month. However, bookstore shelves and streaming services will likely already be overloaded with LGBTQ+ content that month. Putting out the film in August will give Red, White, & Royal Blue more room to breathe.
This release date will also perfectly place it at a time that summer tentpoles are winding down in theaters. The only wide release titles that are scheduled for that weekend so far are the Gran Turismo movie and the horror film The Last Voyage of the Demeter. Neither of those projects have a huge overlap with the demographics of Red, White, & Royal Blue‘s intended audience, which will allow them to thrive without huge competition.
Red, White, & Royal Blue is also perfectly placed after the release of Netflix’s Heartstopper season 2 on August 3. Once fans of that series are finished binging the new season, they will likely be hungry for more material in a similar vein. The new film will be perfectly poised to scoop up those viewers, presenting a similarly sweet story in a slightly less young adult context.
