The worlds of Barbie and Dune collide in a new imagining of what a crossover toy between the two franchises would look like. Directed by Greta Gerwig, Barbie will bring the iconic Mattel figure to life in live-action, with Margot Robbie playing the titular role and Ryan Gosling playing Ken. The movie appears to be a far cry from Denis Villeneuve’s Dune (and its upcoming sequel), which follows Timothée Chalamet’s Paul Atreides as he contends with rival factions and giant sandworms on the desert planet of Arrakis.
Now, several months ahead of the Barbie release date, artist natalie.3dblah on Instagram imagines an epic toy crossover between Gerwig’s upcoming movie and the world of Dune.
The crossover merch features a pink sandworm set, dubbed the “Barbie Dream Sandworm,” which comes complete with a saddle, maker hook, and thumper device.
The World Of Barbie Is Ripe For Crossovers
The Barbie toy line from Mattel is one of the most recognizable and iconic toys in the world, first hitting shelves back in 1959. It remains to be seen how Gerwig’s Barbie movie will fare with audiences, but the film could potentially open up a world of exciting crossover opportunities. The general premise of the upcoming movie further allows for some type of cinematic crossover.
Barbie‘s central plot is said to follow Robbie’s character as she is expelled from Barbieland for being imperfect. Barbie then sets off to find the human world with Ken in order to find true happiness. If Barbieland exists as some sort of alternate dimension separate from the “real” world, the possibility then exists that Barbie could travel to other dimensions or realities in future films.
Perhaps a future film sees Barbie crossover with the world of Transformers, another franchise based on a popular toy line. With the MCU now also dealing heavily with the multiverse, maybe Robbie’s character could eventually interact with a superhero. Of course, any such crossover would include overcoming a host of rights-related issues. Thankfully, however, the epic Barbie and Dune crossover above might be the most possible of them all, with both movies under the umbrella of Warner Bros.
