Ben Affleck’s new thriller Hypnotic earns a Rotten Tomatoes score that is as bad as Justice League. In Hypnotic, Affleck plays protagonist Danny Rourke, a detective looking into a mystery surrounding his missing daughter. Hypnotic is directed by Robert Rodriguez (El Mariachi, From Dusk Till Dawn, Machete, Sin City) and stars Alica Braga (niece of legendary Brazilian actress Sonia Braga) and JD Pardo. Despite anticipation around the movie, the reviews have been mixed to poor, adding to another collection of Ben Affleck’s films that missed the mark with critics.

With Hypnotic now in theaters, the film’s Rotten Tomatoes score is a rotten 39 percent, the same score that the original Justice League received in 2017. This is based on 51 reviews from critics, so the score may change slightly as more reviews are released. As of this writing, the audience score was higher, with 52 percent.

Ben Affleck’s Rotten Tomato Scores Are Notoriously Variable

The current Tomatometer places Hypnotic as one of Affleck’s worst-rated movies on Rotten Tomatoes in the last few years. It has scored just as low as the widely-panned Justice League, while other historic Affleck duds have included Live by Night (34 percent), He’s Just Not That Into You (41 percent), and perhaps most infamously Gigli (6 percent). It is also not his first thriller to score low, with 2022’s Deep Water earning 36 percent.

Despite some notoriously low-rated movies in Affleck’s filmography, the actor has also earned some critically praised films in recent years. At the same time Hypnotic hits theaters, Affleck had another movie released in April 2023. The drama biopic Air – which Affleck directed, produced, and starred in – currently boasts a 92 percent Certified Fresh score on Rotten Tomatoes. Released only a few weeks apart from each other, Affleck stars in one of the best and worst high-profile films of 2023 so far.

Having two movies with starkly different receptions is pretty characteristic of Affleck’s recent career. Looking at Affleck’s last three years, his Rotten Tomatoes scores range from 5 percent for The Last Thing He Wanted to 92 percent for Air. Affleck is an Oscar-winning creator behind Best Picture’s Argo and Best Original Screenplay’s Good Will Hunting and inexplicably has a share of select thinly-plotted films. The recent Hypnotic score only further emphasizes this trend, making the reception for Affleck’s other upcoming movies, such as The Flash, all the more intriguing.
